Amanecer

The Empire of Amanecer rules the majority of the Dawn Sea and its islands. In the past, it completely dominated the sea and the adjoining lands, but after the Second Dark Age, was reduced to controlling only a handful of islands, before resurging again in the early 16th Century. It is ruled by a line of emperors and empresses, who possess great Authority granted by the Odists in ancient times. Beneath the Imperial Throne are the nobility, who govern land in the name of the emperor, generally bearing the honorific "Don" or "Doña". When the Empire was reunified in 1520, the victorious caudillo was granted the title of Visir by the emperor, effectively making him and his successors the de facto rulers of the empire.
The reconquest of former imperial lands is now being driven largely by private individuals, known as conquistadores. In reward for conquering new lands, they are granted haciendas, hereditary plots of private land, generally used for agriculture, mining, production, or a combination of the three. In many cases, however, individuals are granted encomiendas, the exclusive right to the use of a particular pool of labour; effectively communal slavery. While slavery is formally outlawed in the Empire, the encomienda system has thus far been supported by the Visirs. The most successful conquistadores are sometimes granted noble titles in addition to haciendas and encomiendas, while local rulers who submit to Imperial rule are generally allowed to keep their positions, and are known as caziques.
