The Crab Farms

Draft Crabs are an essential part of The Republic of Geld's transport infrastructure. This giant crabs make for great draft animals - a mediocre one can traverse up an down a river with ease. A great one can be equipped with several barges, making for an incredibly mobile trade vessel.

Thus, nearly every riverside town in The Republic would have its very own Crab Farm. Yeffield is no different. The Crab farm is an area to breed, keep, and train Crabs for commercial use.

Location

Just off the main docks is the crab farm. Its nestled into a particularly thick area of reeds and consists of mostly small stilted bungalows. The farm itself is actually quite large. There's maybe 20-30 people working there at any given time. That's because it extends far past just crab rearing.

It has buildings for the crabs, and most importantly several paddocks. However, it also has several areas for farming weeds and Freshwater Serpents. This is used as feed for crabs on the farm but also sold to sailors and merchants who own crabs.

The Farm

The Paddocks. Further out into the lake are the paddocks. This is where the crabs are all kept. The farmers have to don large leather waders to go out here and are generally up to their belly in water. Crab rearing is quite a dangerous job. The crabs are definitely strong enough to crush you with their claws, and far more mobile than you in water. That's why its a fine balance of intimidation from a young age and giving them what they want. Generally they aren't hostile or territorial and can be bribed with a Sweetwater Serpent

The Pits. The Pits are a bit further inland. They're kept far away from the buildings due to the stench. They're a series of dugout areas, each one filled with mud, water, ichor, and any trash or scraps accumulated by the farm. This is where the Sweetwater Serpents are bred. When you look down into the pits all you see is a wreathing mess of skin of epidermis and mud. Every now and then farmers have to go here to fish out some of the worms with large hooked poles. Nobody wants this job.

Housing. The rest of the farm is just housing for the workers. Series of low bungalows on stilts. They're all quite nice for what they are. Jobst, the owner, lives in a slightly nicer house, a bit further away from the banks. Its a typical whit house with a red shingled roof. Two stories, nice little terrace as well.

Most of the processing of the products happen off site.
