A Peculiar Man

Throughout the history of the world, there have been many that have shaped the world for better or worse and left their mark no matter how long time has passed, but none have been more fascinating and strange than that of Harold Rendel or his more well know moniker of Harold the Kind, a homeless man from now dissolved Commune of Wren. One might ask how a homeless man could cause a change in the world, well the circumstances may surprise you. Harold is said to have been born into a wealthy family and was given everything could ever have wanted, and would eventually inherit all of it, yet for some reason he was truly never happy with his life. This reason was mainly due to him being a kind soul who always wanted to help people in need with the wealth he had, but his parent refused to do so because they earned their wealth, and giving it away to those who were unfortunate was beneath to them. This changed when Harold took over the family fortune and began to use it to create homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and jobs to help the poor and downtrodden build lives for themselves. Many considered Harold at this point a saint and a shining beacon of his community because of such acts, becoming a champion of the people. However, the upper class saw Harold as a nuisance and a threat to their power and conspired to destroy him believing that he sought to gain the love of the people to increase his power. This was not true, but they targeted him and began to steal his wealth by tricking him into scams and unfavorable contracts. It would result in him losing much of his family's wealth.   This eventually left him to sell off all of his assets to pay off his debts and almost left him destitute from the entire ordeal. However, rather than keep whatever money he had left, he decided to give it away to all whole were less fortunate than him, and became homeless for many years. Harold during this time would often be living on the streets of his home in the city of Torth scavenging for scraps and doing odd jobs here and there to get by. Yet his kindness never left him as he helped anyone who needed help from sharing what food he had or even offering the clothes on his back when he could. This made many people give him the name Harold the Kind due to his many charitable acts and never asking for anything in return. For many years he would spend his days on the streets, never truly getting out of poverty and trying to survive, yet he never gave up helping others no matter how hard it seemed, and eventually, people would return the favor for his kindness when he could. This created a strong sense of community within the lower and middle class of Torth thanks to his example. Yet in all of his life, one of his acts would lead to the great change that would echo out into the annals of history.

A Journey of Compassion

What was unknown to Harold at the time was his country, the Kingdom of Wren had become yet another victim of revolution as was the time that was the Age of Revolutions. With trouble brewing for years, the wealthy took advantage of the poor and they had just enough of it. Riots would be common in the streets of Torth, but Harold would not become a part of them, being greatly against violence and staying out of it as much as he could. But it didn't stop him from dragging away wounded protestors and soldiers to safety when things became violent when he was near. However, Torth would fall victim to war as the revolution as the streets would run red with blood over his beloved city, forcing him and many others underground in the sewers to avoid the fighting creating underground communities. Food was scarce, forcing many volunteers to head up the streets to search for anything they could find, with Harold volunteering for many runs while avoiding gunfire and explosions that rocked the city. It was during one of these runs that he came across a small boy alone in the streets his name being Loden or Lodey who had become separated from his mother during the fighting. From that moment Harold would watch over Loden and raise him as his own. He did his best to raise the boy as best he could considering the circumstances, but with the fighting getting worse, he decided to leave the city with him to find safety.   It did become clear however that the boy had to be returned to his mother where he belonged despite not knowing where she was or if she was even alive. However, Lodey despite being fairly young had a faint idea of where she might have gone, stating that she was heading to the Kingdom of Kandare, where she had family, and told him should they get separated find a friend and give them a secret letter to them to receive instructions. The boy despite only knowing Harold for a short time considered him a friend due to the great kindness he had given him. Upon reading the letter he was surprised to discover they the boy was a noble, Loden Vernes Ormstead, and his mother the Duchess Rena Ormstead, partially making him royalty. However, this did not matter to Harold as he simply wanted to return a lost boy to his mother. I did mean matter to other people though, being the revolutionaries who would most likely kill the boy should be discovered. So in a daring escape from the city, they managed to get to the countryside, yet they were far safe as the war had engulfed many parts of the country as well, leading them to traverse danger and peril along the way to the sea. Harold did everything he could to protect Lodey, along with protecting his innocence to ensure it was not twisted by the sorrow and hatred that surrounded him. Often teaching the ideals of empathy, compassion, and hope should be held to one's heart so that no matter how hard the struggle may be one would never be consumed by the darkness that surrounded them.

Their journey would be a long one from the inland cities to the stony shores, meeting new companions that would join them for their reasons, such as the Yuhen Turis, the neutralist who lost everything trying to keep the peace, Juni Penn, a former teenage revolutionary that sought a better world and Oster Worten, an old royalist soldier trying to reach his family to flee the country. While they were at odds with each other for their political views, Harold's kindness managed to tear down the walls that were built around them to remind them that they were all in the end. But all the while, they would be hunted by the revolutionaries who knew of Lodey's heritage and would often be made to move from place to place to avoid capture. This of course did not stop Harold from maintaining his duties in his ward showing him the beauty of the world and its wonders even in the horrors of war. Eventually, after a long journey filled with heartfelt moments and times of loss, they would finally make it to the sea, where they had already said goodbye to their companions who had their journeys to finish. After some time searching for a ship for Corles and one last escape from their pursuers, they managed to find passage on a merchant ship and work off their debt by working on it for several months and soon found themselves in Kandare.

A Heartwarming Legacy

After entering the country and following the directions given to them in their letter, they eventually found Lodey's mother but had to sneak in due to the guards not letting them through to see her, and what a joyous reunion it was for a boy to be with his mother once more. When she asked how she could thank Harold, he simply said that seeing the boy home was enough and simply said farewell to everyone's surprise. Yet the Duchess would not have it and decided to offer him a job instead and give him a gift, to give him a home here and to be Lodey's guardian which he kindly accepted for no one should refuse a gift. For the rest of his days, he would watch over the boy as his son and continue to guide him to be a kind young man who sought to do good in the world. Along with him continually helping those in need when he comes across them, as well as seeing Lodey grow into a fine young man, who would see that the world become a better place.

However, Harold would not live to see the change his ward would bring after passing away peacefully in his sleep, he would be remembered and honored for his service later on. Loden entered politics in Kandare seeking to improve society and bring reforms to ensure that peace and stability would ensure its survival from the ravages of revolution. Along with acting as an emissary to improve relations with the kingdom's neighbors and later on became a political advisor to the king. He would also create a philosophical teaching known as Rendelism that surrounded the ideas of charity, community, and cooperation to better bring people together no matter their nationality or faith. He would be fondly remembered as one the kingdom's most influential nobles and centuries later his reforms would transform the kingdom into the Democratic Kandaren Kingdom, a founding member of the Coalition of Democratic States that still exist today. Today, a statue stands featuring Harold and Loden in honor of their service to the kingdom.

Harold has always had a strange sense of helping others in need rather than helping himself when he is down on his luck. Believing that people deserve to have some comfort and happiness in their lives rather than constant struggle. Showing them kindness and generosity to all around him, rather than sending them away.
