Garden of Silence Physical / Metaphysical Law in The Centurion's Riddle | World Anvil

Garden of Silence

A Garden of Silence is perhaps the most famous type of Garden, which cultivates stillness and quiet in all forms, and breeds them together into a metaphysical space. They are without argument the hardest Garden to create, as they must maintain a barrier between the natural entropy of the universe and the stillness, and even the smallest leak risks destroying the Garden altogether. Currently there is only one Garden of Silence known to mankind, found at the base of the City of Pleated Light, crafted by the prolific Gardener.

Manifestation

Unlike other types of Gardens, two Gardens of Silence rarely look the same, and manifest in the likeness of their creator's identity. A Garden of Silence crafted by a Druid might consist of all sorts of flora and fauna, whereas the same product created by a Technomancer could be built of arcane skyscrapers and distributed glyphs. Creatures native to Gardens of Silence are often frightening to visitors, as they never evolved to require auditory senses, and make up for that gap with extra eyes and other sensory organs.

Localization

By their very nature, a phenomenon common within all Gardens of Silence is their complete and total lack of noise, as sound does not exist past the forest's edge. This rule seems to extend even to True Names, although legends state that there are very rare, powerful Words that may defy this rule, and thus threaten the sanctity of the Garden. While some vibrations can be felt in a Garden of Silence, their appearance is unreliable at best, and thus few creatures evolve to use Tremorsense, and technologies that rely on them are practically useless within the Garden.   Upon further study, Albus Rickette discovered that a Garden of Silence also inhibits powers aligned to Chaos and Entropy, with its purest forms all but nullified within the forest's boughs.
