The Sailing Village Settlement in The Call of The Tree | World Anvil

The Sailing Village

Staying as a group in one place on The Surface layers is a very bad idea. For an unknown reason, whenever someone does so, more and more Beasts from Above start to swarm down on their location. Because of that, almost all tribes living on The Surface layers need to constantly move, leading a nomadic life.   But after the discovery of the properties of the Sandboards, one tribe decided to put the technology related to them to use. They built a village capable of sailing through the endless sands covering The Surface.

Giant moving construction

The whole village is placed on top of the platform made out of connected scrap and Beast carapaces, all standing on 24 2 meters high fins which can move up and down to partially compensate for the uneven terrain. Similarly to Surface Bazaar, a special roof made out of the transparent leg webbings of Beasts has been made to protect the inhabitants of the village from the dangerous sunlight. Additionally, the roof made out of this material and placed at a low angle works as a sail which propels the platform forward (It is unknown what causes the Beast webbings to always act as if the wind blew on them).

The work never ends

To maintain and operate the structure the members of the tribe need to work day and night. As long as the village isn't anchored, there's always scouts, sail operators and repairmen walking everywhere. Without them, the settlement would burn and fell apart long ago. For the same reason, there's hunters and tradesmen both living here and outsiders visiting daily with new Beast parts that can be used to patch up the construction.

Architecture

Thanks to the permanent roof protecting from the sun's corrosion, the villagers had the opportunity to build more than just tents. And although they still had to watch for the weight of their houses, otherwise the village wouldn't move, thanks to the Beast gas bladders, most of them have solid walls and roofs above their heads.

Sandboard production

As one could expect, the creators of a village than can sail on a windless desert have a knack for creating sandboards. In fact, they are so good, the other tribes visit them occasionally just to buy new or maintain their sandboards in a top-notch state. And while the sandboards aren't as useful on the lower layers, there are buyers for them, either collectors or users. This has made the inhabitants of the village one of the most prosperous tribes living so far up.

Defenses

The greatest defense the village has is that it just can move away should any danger show up. Other than that, there are shooting positions on every side of the platform and thanks to the protective roof, aside from the Spearguns, the members of the tribe can use the regular firearms.

I was reading this and the whole time I was thinking "What if the Seekers of The Black Sun see the village!?". You are getting me invested in your world ;)

Glad to hear you like it, and oh yeah, an encounter between them could be interesting.

This is such a cool idea for a village! The image of them sailing across the sands is very cinematic. :D
