Guide Posts

The Guides are a group of people who work as couriers, peacekeepers and guides. After they finish their job and go back to one of the transit cities (settlements between The Surface and The Tree layers), there is a place where they can rest while waiting for another bounty. Where there's warm food and where they can listen to the gossip of their fellow coworkers. Those places are simply called Guide Posts.

A place of rest

Most of the transit cities are located on the layers low enough for the sunlight to not be as dangerous or corrosive anymore. Because of that, there are still random preserved buildings, something more common on the lower layers of The Pit. Most of the Guide Posts are such repurposed buildings. Sometimes they have many floors, sometimes they are complexes of smaller houses, but there are always things common for those places.
  • Canteen - serving both cold and warm meals.
  • The sleeping rooms with bunk beds - while those with money usually rent out their own places to stay, everyone else who has any rank as a Guide can stay here whenever they want.
  • Locker rooms - an additional safety compared to the standard lockers one can rent out when going through the transit city
  • Entrance/bounty room - here's where most of the outsiders (aside from some VIPs who go directly to the owner of the Post) can leave their requests, and bounties. Staff working here can help anyone with their packages and filling the forms.
  • Training rooms
  • Day room - a place to relax.
  • Shower rooms - to wash out tons of sand that goes in everywhere. Sometimes instead of them, there is a bathhouse, but in most cases, the bathhouses are the separate buildings owned by unrelated business owners.

Symbols

While the sunlight in the transit cities isn't as strong as to turn the buildings to sand, it still can bleach things, although it takes at least a full week of exposure before the things start to get whiter and bleaker. Still, because of that, renovating the outside of the houses is not a thing that is often done, even in case of the Guide Posts. But no matter the level of their "beautification", most of them are marked in some way. Their symbols, mixed with the symbol of the city they are located in are usually carved in their walls or in some metal plates, to prevent their corrosion as much as possible.

These sound like such nice places to have a rest. I liked the section about the symbols having to be carved in materials that resist the sun's corrosion.
