The Sword of the Vales

Ayanna stood alone against the hordes. She watched the abominations crawl over the misty realm that her Lord Father had created. Her eyes narrowed as the first of them crested the top of the last hill. She smiled as she hefted Moonglass, the glimmer of the Vales reflecting off the long thin blade. With a mighty war cry, the lone goddess charged the enemy in defence of her world.

Summary

It is said that Kaenesh unwittingly unleashed the Kichian onto Ikkaril when he visited their realm in search of inspiration to transform the then newly-formed realm into something worthy. Ayanna saved him, bodily throwing him out of the Shifting Vales and then standing firm against wave after wave of Kichian while guarding the way to the rest of the planes within the Realm. Throughout her battle, she wielded Moonglass - her trusty one-and-a-half edge blade.   Only when reinforcements arrived, first in the shape of the elves and the draconae, and then the dwarves and orcs, did Ayanna allowed her brethren to carry her off the battlefield. She offered Moonglass to Lhoris Torlar, an elf warrior who had been one of the first to join her on the battlefield and had managed to survive this long. Lhoris promised to the goddess that he would return the blade to her one way of the other. Lhoris led many a charge against the Kichian, always wielding Moonglass.   Moonglass, embued with the will and power of its mistress, worked to protect Lhoris, often seeming to move of its own accord to block incoming attacks that could have been fatal to its wielder. It is said that when Lhoris fell to an ambush, Moonglass's mourning wail was heard throughout the Shifting Vales and all the way into Ashever. Ayanna rushed to see what had happened and found the body of the warrior among a pile of butchered Kichian. Legend has it that Moonglass cut down the rest of the Kichian ambush on its own then, too ashamed to show itself after failing to protect its mistress's chosen, it chose to go out in exile.   It is believed that Moonglass still roams the Shifting Vales, fighting the Kichian incursions on its own as penance for the death of Lhoris. Eras of fighting off against the Kichian has allowed it to learn their hidden language and to gain some of their psionic powers. The sword warns the Shifters of Kichian's incursions by manipulating the psionics fields so the Shifters know what areas of the Vales to avoid.

Historical Basis

During the Era of Creation, Kaenesh did enter the realm home to the Kichian and they did follow him to Ikkaril in an attempt to steal psionic energy. Ayanna did save her brethren and fight against the invaders with her sword and she did give it to an elven warrior as a way to pass the torn and allow him to continue to fight.   When Lhoris died, Ayanna did feel it through her link to Moonglass. When she arrived, it was indeed to many a dead or dying Kichian surrounding a very dead elf warrior. Ayanna took her sword back and bound the powers of the Kichian to Moonglass herself, transforming her already divine sword into quite possibly the first of sentient weapon in Ikkaril.

Spread

The myth is well-known amongst elves and humans alike but rarely spoken of. Elven blades created for nobility still are made in the likeness of Moonglass - long blades with a slight curve and one-and-a-half edged.   All Shifters are taught the legend and told to listen carefully for the cries of Moonglass in order to avoid the Michigan whenever out in the Vales.
