Griffin Warmage
This highly-specialised magical unit from the Order of the Griffinknights was once one of the most feared fighting units in the Pinelands and probably across the Free Cities, if not the Bridging Lands as a whole. Mounted on magically-enhanced griffins bred and trained to be loyal to their riders, those war casters would swoop down on their unwary enemies and disappear just as fast.
Composition
Manpower
The unit at its strongest boasted 600 riders. A 200-strong staff would be on hand to help with injuries, cooking meals, repairing tack... The riders themselves were trained to look after their mounts since the griffins would rarely allow anyone to approach without their riders' say so.
Equipment
Each griffin has tailor-made equipment in the form of a saddle, a bit and bridle, a chanfron and peytral. The riders with have four straps that clip onto the saddle to keep the riders safe. They also all hold goggle and a special air mask that allows them to breath at high altitude.
Weaponry
The war mages are proficient with light armor, shortsword and lance. However that last one is usually only used during the combat mission where the units are using as fighting troops rather than reconnaissance
History
The war mages unit was created as by Lord Brarth Cresthell, who was the commander of the Griffinknight at that time. His aim was to create a highly mobile, shock unit capable of laying a huge amount of offensive power in a short amount of time and able to disappear as quickly as they arrived.
The unit played a large part in saving some of the knowledge accumulated by both Eaglehaven and Pinerest during the invasion by the Blanchard Dynasty. Though they are not designed or trained to take part in prolongued front line combat, the Griffin mages helped the Havian armies to hold the Blanchian forces at bay for 3 weeks while Eaglehaven and Pinerest were evacuated. Many of the mages and their griffins lost their lives during this battle, which ultimately led to the end of the Griffinknights.
