Sootsprawl
Sootsprawl is a dense warren of interconnected tenements that house Smokestone's most downtrodden laborers. The name reflects the blackened walls and ash-choked air that define this section of the Hold, where families live packed into tiny rooms and the narrow streets below are constantly clogged with workers, hawkers, and soot-streaked children. Despite its squalor, Sootsprawl is a bastion of stubborn endurance, where residents find solidarity in shared struggle.
Purpose / Function
Sootsprawl is home to a mix of laborers from the nearby forges and workshops, their families, and transient workers looking for a foothold in Smokestone. The population is a mix of native Awarthans and newcomers drawn by the promise of work, even under harsh conditions.
History
Sootsprawl grew organically alongside Smokestone’s rise as an industrial powerhouse. Originally built as temporary housing for workers, it was left to decay as the Hold's resources shifted toward industry. Over time, it became a haven for those with nowhere else to turn, its residents forging their own sense of community amidst neglect.
