Deep beneath the Crabbers' Cove area of Saltmarsh lies a terrible secret. In a hidden cellar underneath one of the old cottages, in the collapsed ruins of an ancient temple, a great and powerful Vampire is trapped.
Xolec Aramastus was born centuries ago, likely sometime in the 49th Century, though there is no reliable information. Myths from the time tell of a terrible lord of the forests who ruled over his people with a bloody fist.
Xolec is an ancient vampire, originally from the Fearwyd Weald. It is said that in his youth he desired power, and it led him to make a pact with a being on another plane of existence to transform him into the vampire.
He was eventually vanquished by a pious paladin of a church that would eventually become the Knights Templar of the Theocracy of the Pale. Xolec was captured and brought to an old temple of Pholtus that used to stand where the fishing port of Saltmarsh can now be found.
Within the temple he was sealed in a magical tomb and there he was taunted, provoked and used as a source of information by the servants of the Lord of the Blinding Light for centuries. Then, there was some kind of unexplained disaster, and the temple was destroyed. It fell in ruins, and slowly, over time, sank into the earth and was forgotten, though it's prize was still held trapped within, as all around him decayed.
Since then Xolec has been slowly recovering his strength and power, despite not feeding on anything but rats for centuries. He has recently been able to send his mind out to the surface for short periods, listening to the thoughts of the populace of Saltmarsh and learning a great many secret things.
The vampire can only leave his tomb if someone pure of heart breaks the seal and carries him from it.
Xolec's story is referenced in an old legend of the western shores, The Tragic Tale of Arch Duke Aramastus.
