Solebosa Settlement in The Azure Sea | World Anvil

Solebosa

Solebosa
On the south-eastern edge of the Isle of Ghosts, Tamquet, near the mouth of a wide river lies the town of Solebosa, a settlement of the Hold of the Sea Princes.   Ruled over by the former Vodun, Governor Guede, the town has a somewhat chaotic history. It has changed hands several times, and stood proudly independent from the Sea Princes for many years before finally succumbing to their rule.   The populace are made up of many races and creeds, as befits a pirate stronghold, but there is still a sizeable community of Tamquetians. This local population seems to be torn between serving the masters of the Sea Princes and serving the unsettled ghosts of the islands northern forests. Strange rituals and muttered curses are still commonplace in Solebosa.   The style of buildings here is reminiscent of the Imperial architecture of Keymouth, though of a much older design. The clean lines and bright colours of the buildings have puzzled scholars for years, but whatever possible link there once was between Solebosa and the Empire is now forgotten.

Notable Features and Buildings

The Black Totem
Surmounted by a huge skull carved from black stone, this large but dingy tavern is the main gathering place of the settlement of Solebosa. Raucous games and entertainment are played here, whilst the Vodun lurk in the shadows, watching and waiting for something...   Church of the Forgotten
This dark, poorly maintained building is the haunt of Vodun in the town. Here they scribe the walls with strange totemic paintings and chant their benedictions to the various powerful Barons of the spirit world, such as Baron Sanmdi and Baron Picante.   Church of the Remembered
Not far from the docks stands a tall building of clean, white stone. Inside is a large hall with many alcoves, each dedicated to one of the many gods of the world. There is no ruling priest in this multi-denominational chapel, though a circle of the priests of Kelanen, Procan and Celestian meet regularly to discuss matters of common interest.   Fort Solebosa
At the wide entrance to the river on which the town stands is a huge fort atop the sea cliffs. Huge chains that lie across the riverbed can be winched up from here, effectively blocking the way to craft.   Ghost Town
Across the river from the main town stands a small village of wooden huts. This dirty and ramshackle place is a community of the Vodun. Here they craft their totems and plan expeditions out to the haunted forests to the north.   Governor's Keep
Right at the northern end of the town sits the large stone house of Governor Guede, who rules the town on behalf of the Sea Princes. It is said that Guede used to be a Vodun.   Solebosa Docks
Situated near the mouth of the river, the docks of Solebosa are a hive of activity. All kinds of vessel can be found harboured here, though al under the watchful gaze of the agents of the Sea Princes. Any ship docking here is expected to pay the Black Tax of the Hold of the Sea Princes.   Solebosa Gardens
This large, walled garden is open to the populace, who find it a pleasant place to wander during the day, and a convenient place for illicit meetings after dark. Many strange herbs are grown here for the use of the Vodun in their poultices and totem crafting.   Spirit Lake
In the south of the town is a large, pleasant lake surrounded by tropical trees and full of brightly coloured fish. Despite the beautiful location the lake is avoided by the populace. It is said that the bound spirits of dead Vodun fly to these waters once their master is released from life, and indeed, some say that they can be seen swimming deep beneath the surface.   The Tradehouse
The Tradehouse in the centre of Solebosa is actually a collection of large inter-linked buildings that form a dark and crowded marketplace. All sorts of goods can be found here, though the dark and busy passageways between the stalls are a prime place for thieves and pickpockets.

Travel Distances

All distances are approximate and via the shortest possible routes, which might not always be practical. Where a travel distance is not shown there is no connecting route possible (e.g. there is no road or waterway that links the places).
