Ships of the Line

The The Azure Sea is a vast body of water, and if one is to explore it, trade across it, or just sail for fun, a vessel of some kind is needed.   There are many types of vessels to be found on the ocean waves, but the ships detailed below account for the majority of them.   Each type of vessel can have several variations and be outfitted in different ways - no two ships are ever exactly the same. Therefore the statistics given below are only averages for that ship type. For a guide on the common parts of a ship see this article: Parts of a Ship.   The following types of vessel are detailed below:

Aranea Navi

Other names: Spider Ship
Crew: 10-20
Cargo: 10 tons
Travel pace: 6 miles per hour
Description: Often mistaken for a giant squid, this aquatic predator of the Drow was designed for navigating the cold waters of aquifers found deep underground. However, the ocean is just another body of water, and one that is nice and dark. When the long legs that normally form the bow of the ship open out, like a spider on the defensive, and reveal the deadly array of harpoons, the enemies of the Drow should be afeared.

Battleship by Gordon Napier

Battleship

Other names: Warship, Ship of the Line
Crew: 60-250
Cargo: 120 tons
Travel pace: 4 miles per hour
Description: This colossal ship is the ultimate design in the Human navy. Long, wide, and incredibly well armed, her sluggish movement is mitigated by her up to five squadrons of flying mounts. There are few ships that can stand to go toe-to-toe with such a beast. Costing almost as much as a castle to operate, there are very few battleships in operation with most coastal navies relying on the smaller warships for protection.

Brigantine

Other names: Schooner
Crew: 20
Cargo: 120 tons
Travel pace: 6 miles per hour
Description: This two-mast ship is fast and quick. Frequently used by smugglers, pirates, and traders in a hurry, her cargo isn’t great but she can sail in waters only 8-foot-deep making her ideal for both ocean and river travel. Her sails can be set quickly, and she responds well to helm commands. This is a solid, robust, and dangerous ship of the sea.

Dawnstar Courier by Simon Kalajdjiev

Dawnstar Courier

Other names: Fins Up
Crew: 6-10
Cargo: 25 tons
Travel pace: 8 miles per hour
Description: These twin-hulled Elven ships are unusual within the Elvish fleet; they are incredibly fast. Eldritch runes carved into the two hulls allow the ship to sail swiftly and in most sea conditions. The massive single triangular sail that dominates the ship gives it the moniker “Fins Up”. These ships are runners - very fast and mobile but not much use in combat.

Galleon

Other names: Cargo Ship, Pleasureboat
Crew: 40
Cargo: 500 tons
Travel pace: 5 miles per hour
Description: These large, ponderous multi-masted ships carry massive cargos reliably across the ocean. Not designed for close combat, the ships usually try to outrun enemy vessels or sink them at range rather than fight. Most galleons are rigged for cargo only. Some have been converted to massive pleasure barges where the cargo space is reduced to a mere 50 tons, but the ship can now transport 500 people.

Galley by Gordon Napier

Galley

Other names: Dromon, Galiot
Crew: 40-80
Cargo: 150 tons
Travel pace: 4 miles per hour
Description: Galleys are long vessels that rely on sails and, primarily, sizable rowing crews to move. These ships can carry siege weapons and soldiers to war or transport large amounts of cargo for merchants. No matter the ship's purpose, the crew almost always hires extra protection, since galleys make large, cargo-rich targets for pirates.

Goadeboat

Other names: Bloch Hadda
Crew: 40
Cargo: 500 tons
Travel pace: 2 miles per hour
Description: These titanic wooden and metal Dwarven constructs are driven by a large rotating paddle-wheel at the back of the ship. It takes 10 dwarves to turn the wheel once, and 10 more to keep it slowly turning once it is going. However, it means the ship doesn’t rely on the wind, and can travel in a straight line. The top deck is therefore limited to helm control and weapons platforms allowing the use of a trebuchet. The notion of being fired upon from such a range scares off most would be attackers and the damage out-put is enough to sink smaller ships before they’re within 300 feet of the dwarvish ship. Ironically, a goadeboat is used almost exclusively for transporting ores and other heavy and bulky cargo.

Keelboat by Teo Yong Jin

Keelboat

Other names: Keep Boat, Poleboat
Crew: 1-8
Cargo: 0.5 tons
Travel pace: 3 miles per hour
Description: One of the smallest sailing vessels, keelboats can be sailed, rowed or poled by a single person. These ships often transport small amounts of cargo or passengers. They're perfect for pleasure cruises, as they're easier and less expensive to operate than larger vessels. Keelboats can navigate many rivers.

Krulla

Other names: Dra'Kal
Crew: 20-50
Cargo: 80 tons
Travel pace: 4 miles per hour
Description: One of the few Orcish vessels remaining since the days that Orcs regularly sailed the waves looking for lands to invade. A spiked war galley designed for ramming the enemy ship and boarding it to defeat it, the Krulla class of galley strikes fear into even the most stout-hearted sea captain.

Longship by Unknown

Longship

Other names: Longboat, Drakkar
Crew: 40-100
Cargo: 10 tons
Travel pace: 5 miles per hour
Description: Longships are vessels that rely on a rowing crew and sails to move across the sea. These ships are typically used to carry soldiers into combat. The size of a longship makes it easy for troops to get on and off quickly, making it the perfect ship for engaging in surprise strikes.

Moonborne Warship

Other names: Gaeth Sodanin
Crew: 40-120
Cargo: 100 tons
Travel pace: 5 miles per hour
Description: The only warship currently used in the Elvish fleet; this large ship focuses on destroying the crew of opposing vessels using its aerial forces. Two long hulls are bridged by the upper decks that have large doors running the length of the ship. These doors open to allow the aerial units of the ship to fly out. Their squadrons alone can sink whole fleets, and their crews are so well trained it is folly to make the mistake that this is anything less than a deadly ship of war.

Rowboat by YellowCatMiya

Rowboat

Other names: Scull
Crew: 1-10
Cargo: 0.25 tons
Travel pace: 2 miles per hour
Description: The humble rowboat serves to ferry passengers back and forth from larger ships or to navigate lakes and rivers. Due to its simple, versatile design, a rowboat has no decks or typical crew. Weighing 100 pounds, a rowboat is easy to transport and might be carried by larger ships.

S'sakeen Transport Pod

Other names: Waheel
Crew: 12-120
Cargo: 50 tons
Travel pace: 5 miles per hour
Description: Constructed by the Merfolk out of mother-of-pearl shell and coral the S’sakaen looks like an albino sea-dragon. Long frills protrude seemingly from random angles all along its length. Those frills are in fact the pod’s oars. Manned by 10 crew these frills when gently rocked back and forth create a vacuum in the surrounding area pulling the pod forward with remarkable speed. The bow of the pod features a large coral horn used for ramming other ships.

S'sasawe War Canoe by Simon Kalajdjiev

S'sasawe War Canoe

Other names: Thus'sa
Crew: 20
Cargo: 2 tons
Travel pace: 4 miles per hour
Description: This long canoe of the Lizardfolk is often carved out of a single tree trunk and often in the shape of a crocodile, snake, or eel with the naval ram acting as the head of the animal. Sleek and capable of an amazing burst of speed when needed, these canoes are designed for one day forays into enemy territory and act as troop transports across the marshes. The crew are all heavily armed ship’s guard and once they reach their goal, they all disembark. The tradition runs, if you board a canoe for war, you do not board again until you’ve achieved victory or found embrace in the jaws of death.

Sailing Ship

Other names: Caravel
Crew: 15-150
Cargo: 120 tons
Travel pace: 3 miles per hour
Description: The sailing ship, or caravel is a small highly-maneuverable ship developed by the Cerulean Empire to explore along the eastern coasts of The Azure Sea. The lateen sails gaie it speed and the capacity for sailing windward. They are normally two or three-masted, and can be outfitted with a deck weapon, though they are generally not strong enough to support rams.

Sloop by Gordon Napier

Sloop

Other names: Cutter
Crew: 10-20
Cargo: 100 tons
Travel pace: 6 miles per hour
Description: A single mast propels this craft quickly and efficiently. Able of hauling as much cargo as a sailing ship but with less armament and significantly less crew.
