Goryt Character in The Azure Sea | World Anvil

Goryt

Eld

In the ancient Baraxi Ruins above the town of Redshore a strange hermit makes his home. The elderly [tortle] Goryt has lived here for several years and keeps to himself. In turn he is generally left alone by the townsfolk, and they seem to have some sort of understanding with one another.   Goryt may just be the only Tortle in all of the Western Commonlands.   Goryt carries the title "Eld", suggesting he is a revered leader of his people. He also seems to observe the religious rites of Beory, the Goryt himself refers to "Father Earth" when discussing such matters.   The old Tortle has a pet salamander called Bitra. This small creature darts around rapidly, and glows with a bioluminescent blue colour.

Appearance and Mannerisms

At 57 years of age Goryt is counted very elderly by the usual lifespans of Tortles. His olive skin is deeply wrinkled, and his eyes seem to hold deep, dark pools of wisdom. Goryt's shell is pock-marked and weathered a deep brown.   Eld Goryt is a stoic figure, who speaks slowly and with distinct meaning. He rarely shows any emotion in his voice or face, instead using the Tortle body-language of kara-tai to convery deeper meaning.   He rarely wears any clothing, favouring instead belts and harnesses to carry his belongings.   Despite his age Goryt remains limber and agile, and can burts into sudden speed if threatened.

Notable Achievements

None know quite how Goryt arrived in Redshore , or for what reason, but the fact he made it this far from his ancestral homeland of Baragua Island.   Tortles are generally considered poor swimmers, though capable of floating on water and can hold their breath for over an hour. Their high buoyancy grants them the ability to cross swamps, mud, and quicksand with little difficulty, but to cross over 1000 miles of open ocean alone is an astounding feat.
