Korsan Empire
The Korsan Empire was a vast empire that dominated much of western Armara and the Petranesian Islands over the course of its turbulent 3,000-year history. Although the empire fell over 1,500 years ago its culture still dominates much of western Armara, even far outside its original borders.
Structure
The political structure of the Korsan Empire varied strongly throughout its history, being a unitary kingdom until 422 AF, then morphing into a more complex multinational empire incorporating kings of conquered kingdoms as provincial leaders. After a civil war in 979 however, when one provincial leader tried to usurp the imperial throne, Korsus took more direct control of many of its provinces, keeping the system for certain provinces (known as Trust Provinces) and replacing the kings with Korsus-born nobles and generals in other less stable provinces (the Imperial Provinces).
History
In the first century BF, according to Korsus' founding myth, the future founders of Korsus were exiled from their native Jaram for staging a coup for the throne. After a five-year journey through the region to find new land to settle, the exiles found a spot on the banks of the River Gisghari. Mure Kira planted his staff in the soil, naming this new settlement Korsus after the king Korsu who they had just tried to dethrone, as a sarcastic gesture.
Demography and Population
At the time of the first proper census in 571 AF, the imperial population sat at around 12 million. By 1000 this had grown to over 65 million. By the turn of the 14th century, with the Eridan Industrial Revolution in full swing, the Empire's population had ballooned to more than 400 million. As technologies improved and the Empire expanded, its population stabilized at around 900 million in 1900. By the end of the System's War however, the population began to drop, from 950 million in 2950 to 500 million in 3100, and then 250 by the Empire's disbandment in the 34th century.
