The Founding of Korsus

Korsus' founding myth is the story of how the city of Korsus, capital of the former Korsan Empire, was established and how its founding allowed it to grow to the massive extent seen in later millennia.

Summary

In the late 1st century BF, the city-state of Jaram was ruled by the tyrannical king Korsu. Korsu had grown decadent over the course of his long reign, and the people quickly grew tired of him. In 5 BF a plot was hatched to assassinate Korsu and bring power back to the people of Jaram. The siblings Mure, Tero, and Atu Kira asked the oracle at the temple of Vaashti if their quest would be realized, to which the oracle replied, "Ask and you shall receive, you will create a great kingdom in the name of a powerful man." The three interpreted this answer as a blessing from the gods, but just as they left the temple they were surrounded by the king's guard and brought to the central square to be put on trial. The king had known of their plot to overthrow him and wanted to order them executed, however he instead chose to exile the conspirators as well as their families, as a way of showing he was reasonable, but not one to be challenged.   The conspirators and their families left the city with all the belongings they could carry in a few small carts and began wandering through the open savanna. After a five-year journey through the region to find new land to settle, the exiles found a spot on the banks of the River Gisghari. Mure Kira planted his staff in the soil, naming this new settlement Korsus, after the king they had just tried to dethrone, as a sarcastic gesture.   The group set up camp for the final time, this time intending to stay and build their homes in peace. Korsus was in a prime crossover spot for both outcasts and nomadic herders, many of whom chose to trade with and eventually settle within this new village. Mure Kira's staff lay in the ground it was planted in for 20 years, becoming such a symbol of the group's determination that it and its base were cast in clay to preserve it forever, still in place to this day in Korsus' Kira Square. In 52 AF, after Mure's death in 31 AF and Tero's in 44, their younger sister Atu Kira led a campaign against the city of Jaram, and successfully sacked the city in revenge, paving the way for its eventual conquest barely 4 years later.
