Spidersilk
"Danger: Spiders"
A Happy Accident
Spidersilk is the result of a long chain of decisions, none of which were heading towards making a fabric. Dione was chosen in the Great Timocracy Era to be an agricultural world to feed humanity's burgeoning population as they settled the Sol System. To accomplish this, the usual purpose-built lifeforms were introduced to terraform Dione. Through some quirk of the geography, the terravore rock grubs' engineered biology thrived more than expected, and while they along with the Blackgrass and sporetowers made a thick layer of hyperfertile soil, they also had an explosive population that adapted unexpectedly to the new atmosphere of Dione. By the time the orbital lenses and pressors prepared the final Terraforming, any attempt to plant would be met with ravenous rock grubs the Size of motorcycles. To combat this, predators were added. Specifically, bioengineered spiders that were expected to die off once the Rock Grub population was under control. Two things happened: The spiders and grubs' populations equalized, and the lifecycle of both became important to the continued renewal of the soil. The settlers who planted found that the eerie green webs left by the pony-sized spiders could be woven like cotton, and some enterprising farmers set up spider ranches to harvest the silk directly, which led to the creation of Spidersilk.
Spidersilk is a smooth, comfortable, and durable fabric that takes well to dyes and actually provides some amount of Protection, particularly when it's quilted. It is less expensive, more abundant, and less protective than Martian Silk, which Martian Arms takes enormous caution to keep in house.
