Line Infantry
I gotta say... those clones don't get enough credit. Yeah, we set the charges and blasted the enemy HQ into a crater, but if the clones hadn't kept the synths busy, we'd have been overwhelmed in a heartbeat. Don't ever tell me that the line isn't important. The Expendables Line Infantry, when the belligerents can afford it, are almost always 'expendables' that can absorb eye watering casualties. Famously, the Pan-Solar Consortium favors the Solar Clone Corps for the job, while most Corporations prefer synthetics for the task. That being said, Planetary Defense Forces are often forced to fulfill the functions of the line while waiting for backup, and the Wolfguard in particular is famous for their prowess in a pitched battle. Barring that, most colonies have obligatory militias that can man a tower or defend a wall.
Composition
Manpower
Line infantry units are broken down into squads of six to twenty depending on the outfit and mission. These squads are organized together to form platoons, which collectively form companies, then battalions, then divisions, and then brigades, and then armies. The point of all of this is to bring more troops to a firefight than the enemy has. Line infantry battles are lines on a map, large and typically simple maneuvers, and directions of momentum and initiative.
Equipment
Line infantry in most cases can bring enough gear to last in the field for one week without resupply. In the case of drone armies, this is extended into months.
Line infantry are typically equipped with heavy armor. Mobility is usually less important than protection, as line infantry are meant to be either the tide or the rock that breaks it.
Weaponry
Line infantry soldiers usually have some kind of battle rifle with a sidearm and some sort of melee weapon for when the lines meet. They are usually equpped with mission-specific weapons like missile launchers for use against aircraft or heavy vehicles, or codebreaker drones if a stronghold with automated defenses needs to be penetrated.
Vehicles
Line infantry can be expected to have troop transports, tanks, artillery, and one-passenger scounting vehicles such as hoverbikes or hovercraft.
Tactics
Tactics for line infantry are a matter of maneuver, momentum, and initiative.
