Greenleaf

Greenleaf is the third planet orbiting the Red Sun, Zhu Que. It's official designation is P/2027(Red Sun)03 and was discovered in 2027. It has a moderate tech level and a world-wide population of 220 million.   Greenleaf has a large tropical belt, creating massive jungles and rainforests. Tropical plants provide a variety of life-saving drugs that cannot easily be synthesized in a laboratory. Major drug companies set up shop on Greenleaf, providing the bulk of work for the locals.   Some of Greenleaf's residents, seeing the enormous profits that were being made, began to make 'clippings' of pharmaceutical plants and grow them privately to sell on the black market. The problem became so great that the drug companies began engineering new plant strains with traceable genetic tags, so that the confiscated merchandise could be traced back to the origin point. The technique has not yet led to any major arrests, mostly because there are dozens of small cartels, and they are difficult to track down in the jungle.   The Alliance is aware of the drug-smuggling problem out on Greenleaf, and they are clamping down on enforcement. Landing is more restricted on Greenleaf than on other Rim worlds, though smugglers who know the jungle can always find ways to sneak through.

Geography

New Polynesia

New Polynesia is one of the Alliance Indigenous Heritage Zones, which has been settled by populations looking to sustain ancient cultures from Earth-That-Was. Encompassing a large archipelago in the planet’s tropical belt, New Polynesia consists of several dozen islands, on which ancient traditions from a variety of Polynesian cultures are sustained. Dominating New Polynesia is Kumara, or “the Big Island”, which is the financial and economic center of New Polynesia. The population of Kumara is largely split culturally between populations of Hawaiian Islanders and Maori; the “Tour Boat Three” of Nuie (Tonga), Savai’i (Samoa) and Canberra (Australian Aborigine) share with Kumara as being the main vacation destination for cultural-tourists from the Core. Multiple smaller islands have been settled by a variety of (sometimes reconstructed) Polynesian cultures, but all of them come together bi-annually for the Polyfest celebration on the Big Island.

Raikirua Island / Town of Blue Whale Bay

This small island is on the south-western edge of the New Polynesia archipelago, and has been the homesteaded by four generations of Hoss's family. The main settlement is built on the sheltered shores of Blue Whale Bay. The tribe lives is a somewhat communal fashion, owning individual homes but sharing the orchards, fields, wharenui (central meeting hall), and a fleet of fishing boats. Children are largely raised communally -- there are no orphans on the island! -- and the population of the island is largely self-sufficient, with cousins being shipped off to the "Big Island" to learn professional trades, which they have then brought back to the village. While the tribe claims to be democratic in nature, the real mover and shaker of the community is the dowager Grandmama Mahaika, everyone's grandmother/great-grandmother/great-great grandmother. Grandmama Mahaika is a tiny, grey-haired doll of a woman who could maybe kill you with her brain. When she says jump, every member of the tribe only pauses to ask "How high?"   The island's orchards of bananas, papayas and mangoes are highly profitable exports; the family also raises pigs, cattle and other crops for their own consumption, and as well as a changing variety of tropical flowers, spices, and plants. The family also owns nearly a dozen fishing ships, and does a good export business in fish as well. The clan claims to be of Maori heritage, and celebrates it. They are definitely of Polynesian bloodlines for physical type, although there's other genetics being regularly introduced as well. The community is a very welcoming -- they don't get many visitors, so it's always a good excuse to party! A pig roast potluck on the beach with music and dancing is always centerpiece of any community celebration, and games of beach volleyball and rugby are very popular. When Hoss was in his late teens, the family’s kapa haka team won Best of the Best crown at a Polyfest, and the family has high hopes that the current team may prove champions as well.
Notable Folk of Blue Whale Bay
  • Auntie Ruiha (Maori form of Lousia): often serves as island security officer, takes the responsibility so seriously she’s earned the nickname “Sheriff”. A former Alliance sgt, has a prosthetic leg from the war, partially deaf in one ear and tends to yell a lot, loses her temper easily.
  • Hemi (Maori form of James) Two-Two: squat and fat, has a reputation for being fairly slow-witted, but he’s a damn fine shot and an excellent hunter and tracker
  • Timoti (Maori form of Timothy): slender, tall youthful man; school teacher (grades 7 and under)
  • Grandmama Mahaiki: everyone's grandmother/great-grandmother/great-great grandmother and the matriarch of the clan. Grandmama Mahaika is a tiny, grey-haired doll of a woman who could maybe kill you with her brain. When she says jump, every member of the Blue Whale Bay community only pause to ask "How high?" As an outsider of the clan, Cooper will refer to Grandmama as the Dowager; no member of the clan will call her this, however apt the term.
  • Mama Awina Hoeata -- mother of Hoss, foster-mum for Tilly. 6'-0" and very Rubenesque in build, Awina is a warm, generous soul who loves to take care of children. Very much like her son Hoss in personality, although she’s got a fierce temper when she’s provoked, and can whip the hell outta you.
  • Hohepa “Little Joe” Hoeata -- father of Hoss. He’s half-Pāhekā (his grandfather was a spacer or tourist of some stripe), and shows it by being 5’8” and about 160# (little in comparison to his wife and all of his sons!)
