Sapthan Glacier
General Description
Physical Description
High King Sapthan Glacier was a classically handsome Snow Elven ruler. He had the deep green eyes of the Glaciers. The first to have this trait since High King Halafarin Glacier II. This was paired with long silver hair that he had tied into two braids across the front of his sides of his face, with the back of the hair free flowing down to the middle of his shoulder blade. He was around 6 feet 8 inches tall and had a very muscular physique as he would train every day, as he thought he needed to remain fit to be a good ruler. He had a love for the finer things, as most kings do. He however, was also aware of the cost and so refused to become absorbed by the grandeur of being king. He always wore fine clothing, like purple jerkins and fine silk shirts, but he would always reuse his clothing and have old fabrics combined to make new clothing where possible.
Personality
Sapthan was a calm and collected figure. He grew up having seen the empire his ancestors fought so hard to unite and maintain begin to collapse. He tried to convince his father to take action, however his father was too busy indulging in the victories of war and the benefits of being the king to look outside at the kingdom that was burning outside his palace window. This is what caused him to not only spurn luxury when it was unnecessary, but also why he valued debate and discussion so much. He was much more reflective and a king ready to negotiate. As a result of this skill for negotiating, High King Sapthan Glacier was known as The Peace Maker. This was due into fact to his reign being focused on one thing, the stabilisation of a kingdom that was on the brink of imploding. He would stop several conflicts from occurring, or even end logn running ones. All this would be a direct result from a short two year rebellion, sparked when he began to order his High Lords to begin following his orders and paying taxes again. This revolt allowed himt o end the wars his people were facing internationally.
Personal History
Sapthan's reign is now known as the Last Golden Age of the Snow Elves. As his son took over and began to implament laws and taxes that focused on enriching himself, not his people. There is now a widely held belief that the Snow Elven people are cursed. Sapthan has begun to become a cult like leader, as many believe he was meant to be the one who would break the curse. However. with his early death, they fear nothing will be good again. The Merchants Revolt
The Merchants Revolt was a reaction to the more controlling aspect of High King Sapthans reign. He expected his lords to pay proper taxes and to begin to follow his direct ule again. On top of this, Sapthan began to lower repayments to the Vanos for the huge loans that his father had taken from the family. In Sapthans eyes, the family had not being paying towards defence or other tax related issues and so he began to pay them less to allow him to begin his rebuilding of the nation. This change made the Vanos family revolt, as seeing no other way to power, they decided to try and make their region a fully independent kingdom from Glacier control. As this independence had given them complete control of the Varatosh company after the reign of the Five Queens and then the reign of Faeldir Glacier. Sapthan managed to contain this revolt in one region by the use of his diplomatic skills. He and his steward placated the major lords of the regions, to make sure they had no reason to revolt. The Reylars got money for more forts, the Carnens got a position of power within the court of the king, each person of importance was shown why the Glaciers should rule.
The court trio was split as The Glacier being the power figure, with the Culverins representing the Carrot and the Carnens representing the Sword. Those that considered rebellion were reminded of the Amethyst Rebellion by the Carnens, followed by a Culverin messenger arriving with an offer, a reward for loyalty.
Third Trade War
The centuries after the second trade war with the Humans had meant they were economically ruined. Not only were they paying reparations, they were paying a tax on everything they purchased that went directly to the Snow Elves. On top of this, the Varatosh company was the only trading company formally allowed to serve Voronda.Sapthan had for a few years before taking the throne, met with delegates from the United Human Federation. He heard how extreme factions were becoming more popular and a third trade war was likely to be about to occur. They were very clear the trade embargos and taxes were causing many problems.
Once he took the throne, he removed the Glacier tax from the UHF, he also decreed that the Varatosh Trading Company, could not keep its monopoly. This would result in the merchants revolt . But after the revolt, the government of the UHF agreed to further talks and a third trade war was temporarily avoided. His son however would rekindle the fire. In the eyes of the UHF they had seen the High King go to war to end the trade embargo on the UHF.
The Winters Incursion
High King Faeldir Glacier had reignited the conflict with the Wood Elves. Launching a full invasion of the southern region. It was a brutal conflict of oppression, as during the reign of Faeldir the Wood Elves that were loyal to the Glaciers had realised they were at the whim of the ruler and this began to cause rumbles in the southern kingdoms. Whispers of rebellion.Sapthan Glacier did not see the southern kingdoms as his to rule and so he simply ordered a withdrawal and had the Glacier legions leave. They stopped fighting and left. While this gave the region some peace, within a few years of the peace, the Triumvirates had risen and were soon tearing the region apart.
