Scope
The motivation behind building Terramora
Terramora is my personal take on a "Tolkein-esque" fantasy world. Originally conceived as a homebrewed world for Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, Terramora has grown in its depth and complexity since its first conceptualization. While the world of Terramora is still intended for use as a campaign setting for tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs), it is also a home for developing my skills as a writer, focusing on the processes of detailed worldbuilding, creative writing, conlang exploration, and future css skill development.
The goal of the project
The goal of Terramora is to create an intricately woven and detailed world for TTRPG campaigns, and worldbuilding and fantasy fans to explore. If the project is successful, the world will be so detailed as to make it easy for a player or reader to get lost in the rabbit hole that is this world, without being so burdensome as to diminish the excitement of exploring a new world. It should be a world that people wish to return to again and again as the depth makes the world feel real to readers.
Terramora's Unique Selling point
Admittedly, Terramora at this point does not set itself apart from its contemporaries in any way that is strikingly innovative and unique. Rather, the aim is to set the world apart through its depth and attention to detail. This is expected to be a long term project as new lands will slowly be revealed, with great depth coming to each land before expanding onward, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in these new realms. For fans of fantasy, Terramora will feel homey on the large scale, though it would be risky to say every single foot of this world could be seen as such.
Theme
Genre
Terramora resides in what could be considered as mid-fantasy - magic is widespread and accessible to a wide range of people at a a very low level, and to very few at a high level, with the vast majority of magic users unable to summon enough power to take on a large group themselves, thus keeping magic users in line with the many of this world who cannot wield it. Due to this availability of magic, the growth of technology has slowed considerably compared to Earth, leaving the world in a long sustained 'medieval' period.
Reader Tone
The tone throughout Terramora will vary greatly from region to region. Each region has it's own unique traits which will hopefully come through in the writing that discusses these areas. While the
Emerald Shores may engage the senses with the smell of warm saltwater and the feeling of possibility and hope, the
Greenwood would evoke the warm and damp air of a subtropical forest, mixed with the sense of wonder - both good and bad, and the
Darkwood blanketing the reader in dread and despair, punched with the stench of wet rotting plant matter.
Character Agency
Character agency for campaigns in the world of Terramora is extremely high. Any sessions held on the present date represented in this world and beyond will provide the player agency to attempt virtually anything they want within the world - within a relative level of reason, with the intentional destruction of the world being off limits until further notice. A player's agency is limited in any play that takes place in past dates, as their actions will be restricted to those which do not drastically change the course of the world from that date to the present.
Focus
The primary focus of Terramora is centered around it's peoples - the various races and subraces, their histories, religions, and cultures, and the relationships between different peoples. In order for the world to be reach the level of complexity sought, developing the peoples of the world is a necessity.
The second focal point of Terramora is the natural world. How the world came to be as it is, and what mechanisms make it that way - from plate tectonics, to water and weather patterns - is vital to building the wonderous settings in which the worlds peoples exist.
The third focal point, though one which isn't used in every aspect of the world, is a commentary on the modern world. From politics to sociology, much of the modern world is, or will be conveyed in Terramora. However, do not expect these commentaries to be as straightforward as they may seem at times.
