Kandar of Icedrake Hall

The Silent Tower

Written by David_Ulph

Grand Judge Kandar Icedrake of Icedrake Hall (a.k.a. Kandar the Chaste)

Now, Kandar, my most loyal of subjects, your crusade is to create absolute justice in this dark and decaying world. Seek this out in any ways you can I do not care, whether through the proper legal binding ways of Man or by the end of your blade.
— Shyracon, the All-Father

The note was clear, the writing seeming to blaze with infernal inscription; "Bow before me, and I shall deliver you to the judgement of the Emperor unspoiled"

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

As a Korg, Kandar is already a tall individual. However, Kandar towers above all, even fellow Korgs, casting a domineering shadow by the Emperor's side.   As a Korg, Kandar is also more resistant to poisons and toxins, including the affects of alcohol.

Special abilities

As a Cleric of Knowledge, Kandar is skilled in Insight, Persuasion

Apparel & Accessories

Kandar wields one of two weapons which come with the rank of Grand Judge. All Grand Judges since the title's first inception have wielded a large symbolic cast-iron halberd. The halberd is in a Bardiche-style made from a long thin wooden handle and a single-edged, heavy iron blade. Kandar himself prefers a gold-plated executioner sword that suits his height and occupation.   Kandar Icedrake's armour is that of a black heavy cast-iron plate covered in symbols and scriptures of Imperial and Korg Law. Chains are wrapped in the shape of a saltire across his chest and candles will often be lit atop his shoulders. While he usually doesn't wear it, Kandar's armour does include a grotesque helmet featuring spikes designed to evoke fear. Being mute, his person is covered in various loose pieces of paper, quills and vials of a unique ink that appears to burn intensely while doesn't burn the paper.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Originally, Kandar was being groomed to become a knight for the noble House he was born in to, House Icedrake of Icedrake Hall. When he came of age, already stronger and taller than his fellow Korgs, was gifted unlimited knowledge by the God Kelai. The only stipulation was to undergo a pilgrimage to the Temple of Kelai in the city of Port Rea and become a Cleric of Knowledge.   As with all Clerics of Knowledge, Kandar was cursed with knowing all but not having the ability to speak the words of celestials without his mouth and veins blackening. And so, he covered his mouth with rags and took an oath of silence. For some time, the Gods debated with Kelai about a use for Kandar until the All-Father himself, who is associated with knowledge in law, gave Kandar the crusade of becoming the highest legal profession possible for him.   While Kandar would obviously go on to graciously accept this divine crusade, the Gods had ulterior motives. For if a pawn of the Survivor Gods could find themselves in the highest courts of the Great Western Empire, they could control all the courts of the continent and win back some political influence after the heretical Order of Saint Vortarius succeeded in the Great Schism.

Education

As a child, Kandar was destined to become a Korg Knight to represent House Icedrake and so given extensive Korg Combat Training. Kandar has proficiency in using traditional Frosian weapons; battleaxes, handaxes, throwing hammers and warhammers.

Employment

Kandar is the Grand Judge of the Great Western Empire. This title holds two occupations by the time of the late Third Age. The first is that he presides over the judicial wing of the GWE and thus over all the Imperial Courts. This means he is the Judge of Judges, testing and approving all lawmen that wish to practice a position in the Empire. The second is that of being the personal executioner of the Emperor himself, he who executes the highest of lords.   To become a Grand Judge, you must first pledge yourself as a Champion of the Courts, appointed by the Grand Judge. Then, any Champion may challenge the Grand Judge to single combat, regularly to the death, to claim the title for themselves.

Personality Characteristics

Vices & Personality flaws

Kandar is infamous for wielding his zeal with destructive violence. Many reasons why assassination attempts against the Emperor have failed is due to Kandar's savagery against the enemies of his Master.   The Silent Tower is also noted for especial cruelty in his executions. If he for whatever reason chooses to, Kandar will intentionally fail to make a clean beheading, forcing the final moments of the prisoner to be in extended excruciating pain.   Kandar's rivals, while raising their criticisms away from the Silent Tower's ears, claim he is a cannibal as well, as he will commission that those he executes he will get their crushed bone marrow. This bone marrow, in a brothy state, is all Kandar is ever seen to eat and drink.
