Sir Morien, Goddess of Dogs

Written by Douglysium

Divine Domains

Wild Dogs. The domain and need for a god of dogs has come about due to many of the domesticated dogs once owned by humans have since evolved back into wild creatures. However, unlike wolves, they tend to be smaller and come in a wider variety of odd shapes and sizes. Likewise, despite being undomesticated, some have become dependent on the likes of cities and towns to survive, such as the burgh dog. Whether that be using them to scrounge for food or using them to avoid potential predators. Others still have their entire migration path dependent on where cities and towns are located while smaller dogs, such as the common rat dogs, have been known to stow away on ships or even planes in order to reach new areas. Many wild dogs have evolved much more complex and hardier stomachs than wolves, making their diet more omnivorous and allowing some to act as scavengers feeding off trash or rotting meat and roadkill. Some of these dogs are semi-domesticated(meaning that they are wild but dependent on sentient mortals or their activities). Plenty of domestic dogs still exist but they do not fall under the jurisdiction of Sir Morien, but dogs such as dingos do.     Knights, Loyalty, Faith, Devotion, Brutality, Protection, Bladed-weapons.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Dogs, canine teeth, dog tail, crossbow, bow and arrow, sword, dagger, knight armor, dragonsbane. She is associated with the colors black, gold, silver, and red

Holidays

Sir Morien is one of several gods associated with the Dance of Blood despite it not being a holiday in her name and its legality in some areas because of her associations with honorable combat and duels. Traits that are also prevelant in her respective cult.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

To protect mortals from dragon attacks, prevent dragons from overthrowing the gods, and to protect / uphold the authority of the gods. One of her main goals is the protection of minor gods and mortals in general. Like most members of the Dog Cult she believes in the idea that a “great god” or “first god” who came before Shia and Mora could see the Roots of Fate and thus made a plan for the future based on what they could see. She seeks to try to keep this plan on its supposed course by preventing dragons from taking the place of the gods or significantly damaging the mortal population.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

She is of average height and muscular. She has dog palm-like markings on the palm of her hands and soles of her feet. She has the signature wings of a low blood angle. These wings are silver in color with spots shaped like a dog’s paw on the back and are present even in her divine form.

Facial Features

The area below and around her mouth as well as her neck are scarred due to significant fire damage she experienced during a dragon attack while she was mortal. Also, even while in mortal form, she has sharp canine-like teeth.

Identifying Characteristics

The area below and around her mouth as well as her neck is scarred due to significant fire damage she experienced during a dragon attack while she was mortal. Also, even while in mortal form, she has sharp canine-like teeth. She is of average height and muscular. She has dog palm-like markings on the palm of their hands and soles of their feet. She has the signature wings of low-blood angels but they are silver in color along with spots shaped like a dog’s paw on the back of them.     The scarring on her lower jaw and neck remains even when she is in her divine form(which takes the form of a massive dog the size of an elephant), with fur missing from her lower jaw and neck due to the excessive scarring. All the fur of her divine form is an unnatural shadowy black but her eyes are pure milky white. This gives her the appearance of a 3d pitch-black shadow sometimes. She also smells like sulfur in her divine form and fire can sometimes be seen escaping her maw, which gives her bites a burning quality. Her claws appear to be metal and resemble curved swords or blades and she retains her signature silver wings.

Special abilities

Her most iconic weapon is a black bow she wields. Engraved with runes it is a weapon from the divine armory of the Dogged Knights and like the other weapons in the vault it was forged by powerful gods through the use of boons long ago. It can only be wielded by those with a compatible essence, which can typically(but not always) be surmised by how close the color of one’s essence is to that of the bow. The bow does not need to be supplied with arrows as it will simply create its own from the wielders aura in the form of compressed blades of air that are launched when the string is released. These arrows can be imbued with different kinds of magic. For example, the arrows can be turned into volleys of fire and/or lightning, or create a devastating sonic boom as it flies through air as well as release a shockwave through whatever it makes contact with to shatter said target’s bones. The bow can also launch whirling tornadoes at targets. In the case that arrows are put into this bow they will be enhanced by the magic of the bow.     She is proficient in shadow magic and often uses it to counter some of the light or effects some variations of lunar or solar magic rely on. She can create weapons, armor and constructs that seem to be made of shadow.     The Shadowblade is a weapon created by Morien through the use of magic and the aid of another god. It was created over the course of years by gathering her own divine bone and blood before filtering out the iron before forging it into the strongest of steel and mixing it with a special metal. The method of its creation allows it to act as almost like an extension of her body, although it contains no essence, it works very well with Morien’s aura and boon. Interestingly instead of being stored in a scabbard it can usually be stored within Morien’s body. When it is being stored this way a tattoo appears on one of Moriens arms and her blood becomes black. The sword is known for having a blade that is completely black. To the point where it looks like the place is composed of darkness or shadow(as it does not seem to reflect light). Whatever the reason the blade has for looking like this it seems to be tied to its ability to cut through or distort magic illusions and magic that revolves around light as it is swung. It absorbs virtually any light or light magic that makes contact with it which can cause the blade to become burning hot to the touch. Once the sword has become hot enough its blade will burst into flame and it can release slashes/thrusts of fire. While within Morien it also renders her immune to most light based magic, but comes with the risk of potentially causing her to overheat if the sword simply remains in her body. This sword was most likely designed in an attempt to counter the magic commonly used by the Solar and Lunar Dragonflights. The blade is nearly indestructible but in the rare occasions where it does get damaged it can repair itself using either Morien’s blood or the blood of any potential victims. Sir Morien does not use the sword as often as her bow and arrow because she is more proficient in combat with the latter but she does use the sword in extremely close engagements. Apparently punching her while the sword resides in her body feels like punching an iron wall. The blade can also be used to release slashes of wind and while it normally takes on the form of a sword it can also be converted into a spear, scythe, or axe.     Sir Morien can often be seen wearing a signature black armor that halves the effectiveness of draconic magic used on the wearer, but it also leaves the user unable to cast draconic magic and forces them to use twice as much aura to cast spells. It seems to have a function similar to that of Runic Barrier in its workings. The armor is also way stronger and tougher than anything a mortal could forge. Like the other weapons in the vault, the story goes that apparently, an alliance of gods gave their lives to make the armor and other weapons. However, others say that the weapons are simply some sort of boon.     Her armor makes it harder to cast spells and the need to use her aura to fuel her weapons means that she usually cannot fight for extremely long periods of time and will attempt to end most fights quickly and in an unintentionally brutal fashion.

Apparel & Accessories

She is known for almost always wearing a suit of black knight armor that is stronger than anything a mortal could feasibly forge. The knight resembles the armor worn by the Dog Cult’s knights.

Specialized Equipment

Even in her mortal forms she has enhanced hearing and smell, like that of a dog. While she is proficient with a sword, their true strength lies with guns, arrows, and crossbows(with her aim being one of the best in the world). Furthermore, she is a master of fire, earth and wind magic and proficient in life, and death magic.     Her Shadowblade is a sword that was made from her blood and as such is a part of her body. Morien doesn’t usually carry a sheath for it as it usually resides within her body and she can pull it out when needed. While it is within her body a tattoo can be seen on her body and she is immune to most forms of light magic.     The feathers on her wings are supernaturally sharp and bladelike. They can be used as blades that are as strong as a steel sword. She can fly with her wings.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Apparently, a grandchild of Fervanti, when she was a mortal she, and the city she lived in, were attacked by dragons of the Solar Dragonflight. The Dogged Knights at the time put up a valiant effort in holding off the dragons and evacuating the city but were eventually overwhelmed. This would of course inspire them to join the Cult of Dogs as a member of their Wind Army. She became notoriously good with projectile weapons and a famous sniper, being able to hit the eyes of dragons with guns and even bows or crossbows from great distances. She eventually became the champion of the cult/knights and would be elected as heir for the position as god of dogs after a famous dragon slayer and the previous goddess of dogs, Sir Artorius(who named themselves after King Arthrur and the Roman Lucius Artorius Castus), was killed in battle against another god who betrayed him. After much deliberation from the cult, the now fallen god of horses, and some minor gods who saw into the roots of fate during a meeting of the gods, it was decided that the next god would be determined by a democratic vote within the cult that would then have the winners participate in a tournament. Once they won they would have a chance to win the title as the rightful heir to the god of dogs if a weapon from the divine vault was found to be compatible with them. Sir Morien would go on to complete these tasks and continue to fight for the gods and their divine order against dragons who sought to usurp the gods, those dragons who wished to gain the power of gods through force, or dragons who attacked mortals.     Morien has been very busy during the War of the Moon. She was called upon for a meeting of the gods during which she was allowed to gain a glimpse of the roots of fate for the first time. There she discovered messages left by the previous goddess of dogs, Artorius, and afterward she appeared to contemplate what they saw. After several days she used emergency powers and votes from the high priests to allow for the use of designated draconic magic by dragons and omnia who are part of the cult for the foreseeable future in order to allow Sir Tarasque and other members of the Dogged Knights to fight at full strength.

Gender Identity

She is a cisgender woman who uses she / her pronouns.

Sexuality

She is aromantic.

Personality Characteristics

Likes & Dislikes

She is a massive fan of knights and has become quite knowledgeable on both the history and mythology of knights. She also has a love of weapons wielded by knights. She has a major emphasis on loyalty and has an intense dislike of dishonesty, disloyalty, or betrayal. She believes in the hypothetical “Great God” that the rest of her cult believes in and thus likes the gods in general and believes all gods have an important role they serve or something they teach. She is also known to often muse about the philosophy that other gods may adopt and is considered by some to be a philosopher of sorts.   She harbors a dislike towards most dragons of the Solar and Lunar Dragonflights due to their power-hungry and violent attitudes and history, as well as their disdain for most other races on Terra. She also greatly dislikes grapes and chocolate and it is rumored that ever since becoming a god these have become poisonous to her in the same way it's poisonous for dogs.   Some gods view Morien as naive or stupid due to her relatively young age as a god and Morien views herself as someone who still has much to learn and believes that all gods have something they can teach.

Vices & Personality flaws

In combat, she is known to fight violently and brutally while rarely holding back. Her foes are known to end up looking mangled and bloodied after fights.     Like the cult she oversees part of, she can be very dogmatic and inflexible and is known to be a stickler for rules and tradition to the point where she may shoot herself in the foot. While capable of change she is often slow to do so and a lot of convincing is usually required.

Personality Quirks

She is known to talk in a manner that resembles a medieval knight(using words like thy and the like). However, this speech is mostly based on pop culture or the common image of what knights talked like and many are quick to point out that it is not that historically accurate and it mostly just boils down to “thy” and “thine.” However, considering that she is quite knowledgeable and a bit of a historian when it comes to knights in both the historical and mythological sense she most likely adopted using a more stereotypical knight speech when she was mortal so people could easily and immediately understand her, especially while on the battlefield, and it became so expected of her that it became a habit that carried over to godhood. She is known to drop this speech when surprised or furious.     She can almost always be seen wearing her signature black armor, even as she sleeps. Interestingly, she sleeps while standing or leaning on walls if in mortal form. However, in her divine form she lays down while sleeping.     Due to her dislike of betrayal and dishonesty, she tends to speak in a very blunt and straightforward manner.     Unlike other gods, Morien typically wears her divine paint on her armor. The paint is poisonous.

Social

Family Ties

Both her parents were low-blood angels, with her mom being a member of the Dogged Knights and her father being a child of Fervanti.

Mannerisms

She tends to move in a very stiff and upright fashion when not in combat, “as if she was always part of some military ceremony.” In combat, she is a lot more limber and animalistic in her movements.     Bringing up Hilathu usually leads to Morien letting out a scoff as she sees him as a failure of a god who didn’t know his place in the divine plan of the Great God.

History

Morien was personal friends with Artorius and fought dragons and the cults of disgraced gods alongside him on several occasions. She is known to have greatly looked up to them and Artorius taught her a lot about knights and she served as one of his personal knights for specific missions. Apparently, he has left messages for the next god of dogs that can only be viewed using the root of fate and Morien has only just recently been made aware of them during the events of the War of the Moon.

The god was known for having worked closely with Artorius and the previous goddess of dogs before that. On rare occasions, they allow a select few, such as Morien or Artorius before her, to ride upon his divine form during battle. Morien serems to view him as a mentor figure but he does not see himself as one. He was originally only known as Nat but was later given the name Llamrei after the famous steed of King Arthur from legends of old.

Relationship Reasoning

She has a famous dislike of the dragon due to his cruelty and treatment of mortals. A feeling that has been strengthened due to him and Neia Lun De Draco starting the War of the Moon and declaring war against most of the gods. From Morien’s perspective the dragons usurping the gods by force could interfere with the plan of the supposed Great God. Something that is in her eyes reinforced by most other gods joining the fight against the dragons. The dragon has an immense dislike of the Cult of Dogs and their god due to encouraging a constant resistance towards their dragonflights and being some of the more effective combatants when it comes to fighting off dragon attacks. Worship of dragons that aren’t currently gods is considered blasphemy by Morien and her cult.

Relationship Reasoning

Despite the fact that Eleteros is a disgraced god Morien still has an amicable relationship with him and there is a general alliance between Morien and her cult with Eleteros due to Eleteros still respecting and acknowledging the authority of the gods as well as being kind to mortals and preferring diplomacy. However, worship of Eleteros as a god is still considered blasphemy and will result in due punishment from the Dogged Knights.

Hilathu

Relationship Reasoning

Morien has a dislike of Hilathu as she assumes that those punished by Shia or Mora generally deserve it and that Hilathu did not know his place in the divine plan of the Great God. The knights also frequently clash with worshippers of disgraced gods as continuing to worship such a god is often punishable by death by the word of Mora and Shia unless one repents. The Hilathu Cult is probably one of the Dogged Knight’s biggest enemies but the Knights are more preoccupied with fighting and warding off dragons. However, whenever the Cult of Dogs or Morien come across one or more members of the Hilathu Cult fighting often follows. They also offer a safe haven for those who leave the cult. Bringing up Hilathu usually leads to Morien letting out a scoff as she sees him as a failure. While Morien considers the disgraced god to be an enemy she considers him to be a trivial one as he is already being punished by Shia. The tale of Hilathu is often told by Morien and members of her cult as one of warning in succumbing to hubris.

Relationship Reasoning

She greatly admires Mora and Shia and sees them as the leaders of the god and what are currently the highest ranking gods. She believes them to be incredibly wise due to their advanced age and whenever they talk in her presence she listens attentively and clings on to every word they say. Mora and Shia tend to like Morien for the respect she shows towards them and their domain, and because she is a lot less likely to pull something like Soliairs did to Shia or try to hunt Mora down like Fervanti does, but they also see her as young and naive. She also doesn’t take a side in conflicts involving the two gods fighting each other. She views herself as having no place in their conflicts but also believes the conflicts between them are natural and keeps the other strong.
