Nimbus
The Fallen Jewel of Anuk
Overview
Nimbus was once the crown jewel of the Age of Harmony, a city that shone brighter than any rival. Its towers gleamed above bustling markets, its libraries gathered the wisdom of generations, and its artisans and mages drew admiration from across the land. All of that ended in a single, terrible moment when the city was consumed by a magical catastrophe. What remains is a scar upon the land: a graveyard of splendor, shrouded in mist and dread, and yet irresistibly alluring to adventurers, scavengers, and zealots alike.
History and Fall
In its prime, Nimbus stood as the heart of the peninsula’s political and cultural life. Kings ruled from its keep, scholars debated in marble halls, and merchants carried its goods across seas and mountains. But the ambition that built Nimbus may also have been its undoing. The Cataclysm struck without warning — a blast of unimaginable force that tore stone as though it were parchment. To this day, no one agrees on the cause. Some blame a failed ritual, others speak of divine punishment, and still others insist a meteor shattered the city.
The City Today
The ruins sprawl across miles of broken streets, toppled walls, and hollowed districts. Whole neighborhoods lie sunken into craters, while others are half-consumed by strange crystalline growths or overgrown with twisted vegetation. Fires long extinguished left blackened scars, and stone melted by unknown forces still glitters faintly at night. The Purple Fog lingers in heavy pockets, making breathing difficult and warping sound and sight. Locals swear it can seep into the body itself, leaving mutations or worse.
Though dangerous, the ruins are never empty. Bandits prowl the outer wards, desperate settlers build hovels among broken walls, and strange beasts stalk the mist. Adventurers return with treasures, shards of crystal, and tales of both wonder and horror — though many never return at all.
Mystical Phenomena
Nimbus is haunted not only by memory but by magic itself. The Purple Fog is said to whisper in dreams, to confuse the senses, and to bend light into phantoms. The Obelisk hums faintly when storms pass overhead, and even the bravest avoid touching its cracked surface. Across the ruins, fragments of crystal and relics imbued with unstable energies appear in the rubble. Such discoveries have enriched scholars and merchants alike, but each carries the risk of corruption.
Landmarks of the Ruins
• The Obelisk: Towering over the city’s heart, its fractured form marks the site of the Cataclysm.
• The Castle and Keep: Blackened shells of stone, once symbols of power, now hollow and silent.
• Collapsed Districts: Chasms and rubble fields where entire wards vanished in the blast.
• The Outer Wards: Marginally safer, these are where scavengers, squatters, and criminals dare to linger.
Reputation and Legacy
To scholars, Nimbus is a riddle that could unlock the nature of magic itself. To adventurers, it is the greatest test of courage and greed, promising riches or death. To the commonfolk of the peninsula, it remains a cursed scar — a place of loss and mourning that should never have been disturbed. Yet despite the fear and the danger, the ruins of Nimbus continue to draw the bold, the desperate, and the foolish, each hoping to wrestle secrets from its haunted streets.
