Kryllith

Overview

Beneath the drowned ruins of Nimbus, something stirs in the dark. A whispering rhythm that clicks through stone and echoes like distant thunder. Those who have ventured into the lower burrows tell of creatures half crab and half beetle, their shells glistening like wet obsidian, their eyes reflecting the faintest violet light of delirium.
They call themselves nothing.
But surface folk know them by one name whispered with dread — the Kryllith Hive.

Lore

The Kryllith are believed to have spawned after the Cataclysm that shattered Nimbus. When the purple fog settled and seeped deep into the bedrock, it poisoned more than air and water — it changed the things that dwelled beneath. Some claim the Kryllith were once ordinary crustaceans and burrow beetles, warped by corrupted Tassium veins into new, terrible life. Others say they were born from delirium itself, a living echo of the city’s wound.

Whatever their origin, they now rule the depths as a hive-mind civilization centered around titanic Queens. These vast, multi-armed matriarchs are revered by their spawn as both mothers and gods, birthing the many castes that serve their will. Their minds hum with a psychic resonance that warps thought and dream alike — the deeper one ventures, the louder it becomes, until even sane minds begin to pulse with the rhythm of the hive.

The Castes of the Kryllith

Burrowers — Small, dog-sized diggers that swarm in hundreds. They dig tunnels and harvest minerals, their clicking mandibles echoing through the deep.
Scuttlers — Bipedal laborers and warriors, standing as tall as a man. They wield claws and crude chitin tools, and can be seen hauling stones or corpses through the fog.
Knights — Massive, plated Scuttlers bred for battle. Their shells are thick as iron, and their eyes burn with faint purple light.
Synapses — Pale, translucent variants that act as psychic relays for the Queen. They whisper through the hive-mind and project disorienting psionic shrieks.
Lures — Shapeshifters of imperfect mimicry, able to don a mockery of humanoid form. They lure prey into the hive or serve as decoys above ground.
Queens — Enormous spider-slug-crab hybrids that command their swarms with psychic dominance. Ancient Queens have intellects rivaling mortal scholars and a cruelty equal to any demon.

Territory and Behavior

Kryllith nests are sprawling labyrinths of resin-coated tunnels lined with phosphorescent slime. Central chambers pulse with faint purple light — delirium crystals fused to the very walls. The air is warm and wet, thick with the hum of countless wings and the smell of iron.

Though intelligent, the Kryllith are not malicious by mortal standards. They expand, consume, and protect their Queen’s brood. When multiple hives meet, their psychic frequencies clash — resulting in violent territorial wars that shake the stone.
During new moons, surface folk report “the clicking nights” — when Burrowers pour up from sinkholes in the fog-choked streets of Nimbus to scavenge, collect metal, or drag off the unwary.

Beliefs and Patterns

Scholars of the Conservatory suggest that the Kryllith’s hive song follows a mathematical rhythm — a repeating twelve-beat pattern almost identical to an ancient Aetheric resonance used in pre-Cataclysm magic. Some theorize the Queens are unconsciously trying to reconstruct the lost harmony of Nimbus through instinct alone.

To the Claritingian faithful, the Kryllith are proof that delirium is divine punishment made flesh. To the desperate, they are a source of profit — their carapace plates fetch good silver, and the psionic nodules of the Synapses are prized by mages as unstable focuses.
