Session 42: Journey in the Dark

General Summary

The party woke and made their way deeper down the primary shaft, taking a look down the smaller shafts. Tamugar found one that was only 60 feet to the end of the tunnel, with a couple large stalagmites at the end. Getting a closer look, Tamugar rubbed one, which revealed itself as a stone-toothed creature that could create tentacles to grapple the party. The other stalagmite was a similar creature. Eventually defeating them, the party noticed a crack in the wall behind them, large enough for any humanoid to slip through, one at a time.   The party opted to leave the excavations behind and follow the path instead. They walked for hours in the dark, lit only by their own lanterns and Shadow's enchanted sword. The passage wound its way deeper into the earth, through past many smaller side-passages. Large cobwebs suggested the presence of large spiders, but the party only saw small insects. Some chambers had phosphorescent mushrooms growing against the rock, with spores that Shadow determined were only mild breathing irritants and not the source of a disease.   Eventually, the party found their way into a much larger chamber. Doug left a candle near the entrance, but following the wall around to the right, the party quickly lost sight of it. They found a broken mining pick on the ground, which Doug mended, with no other presence of miners around. Eventually reaching water that lay against the cavern wall, the party left the stone and followed the shore of what appeared to be a large underground lake. After minutes more of walking in the dark, the sounds of moisture periodically dripping into the water was joined by a quiet sound of splashing.
