Session 3: Safehouse
General Summary
Acting on Lanatar's information, the party regrouped and headed towards the north end of the Midnight Expanse to a two-story stone building. Rome sent her ferret, Timmins, in to take a look at the ground floor. Timmins confirmed that there was something dangerous. Entering, the danger proved to be some weapons in the kitchen.
Finding the main floor dirty but uninhabited, the party ventured downstairs, finding a storage room full of crates of varying sizes. Wurst found a trap door in the centre of the floor, opening to a cave below, with a rope ladder attached by the entrance. Opening the crates turned up various dried food items, healer's kits, crossbow bolts, and other supplies. An oval object was attached to the wall in a far corner, with leather draped over it. The party ignored it and climbed down into the cave, except for Brat who stayed above with Schneider.
The cave was large and damp, with a pool in one end. Doug picked up a rock and threw it into the pool, attracting the attention of a chuul, a large insect-like creature with tentacles for a mouth and claws large enough to lift a human. Ogvai was interested in a door in the far wall, near the pool, and he nearly got killed as the chuul picked him up in a claw and poisoned him with its tentacles, but he wriggled free and managed to get the door unlocked, moving safely into the next room. The chuul fixated on Wurst, but the rest of the party managed to destroy the beast, with some well-placed acid bombs from Brat eating away at its carapace.
Brat and Wurst returned up the ladder, investigating the remainder of the house and finding nothing significant. Ogvai, Doug, and Rome took a look in the next room, finding a few smaller crates of crystals, similar to the one they found on the tram. This room also contained a pool and a door in the far wall. Above the pool, a heavy stone was braced into place, with some chains running down through some gears, and the final end of the chains disappearing into the dark pool. Rome called back to Wurst, who deduced that the stone might be a counterweight to open an underwater gate, connecting the two pools via a tunnel under the floor.
Doug and Ogvai investigated the next room, which proved to be a small office with a halfling, Grimscale Hlothran. He revealed much to the party, bargaining for his life. He was an operative of the Ebon Axes, sent from Myas'tara to Heart Of Shards to oversee the transfer of primed and unprimed crystals between Beacon and Myas'tara. He was given messages from higher-level Axes operatives via magical telepathic messages, and had been instructed to carry out the bombing on the tram. He was now set to leave Heart of Shards, returning to Eleth Lilanor, and seek out a high-profile gambler named Kina Veslynd, who had a golden poker chip with runes on one side and a serpent on the other.
While Doug and Ogvai left the room to decide what to do with him, he quickly stood up and teleported away, this time giving a clear glimpse of his magic in use. Searching the room, the party found some magical dust in a pouch and a magical mirror. When Ogvai touched the glass, he found himself pulled through into the storage room above the chuul cave, emerging from the covered object on the wall: a matching mirror. He returned to the party in the office, who took the mirror and moved back through the house, taking the other mirror with them.
Heading back towards the centre of town, the party looked for activities to fill their time before bed. Rome organized an impromptu concert near the Tidewater Exchange. Ogvai pickpocketed easy marks in the crowd while Rome performed. Doug made a little coin wagering with passers-by that he could lift them. Their activities concluded, the party headed back to the Conch & Coral Inn, identifying their magical items and then heading to bed.
