Duchy of New Wharf

Sandwhiched lands pressed between the great Tor'ak Forest to the south, the shadows of Mount Konbul to the north and the Northran Sea to the east with the western exits pouring out into the swamplands of Umoven, New Wharf is a duchy that, much like the capital of the same name, relies on the power of the sea to connect it to the rest of the world. Small villages dot the roads of the Tri-way, and a few minor settlements exist throughout the hold in the gentle valleys; places where the hills provide good access to minerals and ores to create solid defences in the wild. But the real power of the Duchy comes from the capital, the triton city and the sahuagin village that exist within the water at her shores.

Structure

The Duchy of New Wharf is lead by Duke Xu Yaoming, and is over seen by him. Though, with the closeness of the Archduchess being a near permanent member of the Duchy her influence is strong in the way the nation gets run. More so in New Wharf than the other two duchies under her control.

Public Agenda

New Wharf as a duchy focuses on slow and careful exploitation of natural resources. Primarily they're agenda is to exist and prosper without endangering their environment more than required.

Assets

The greatest resources to New Wharf are the Tor'ak Forest to the south and the bounty of the Northran Sea. Large amounts of high quality wood are carefully processed and replaced by druids working tirelessly to reduce influence on the woods and the near endless bounty of the sea provides both their livelihood and the source of their trade.

History

New Wharf was founded early in the fourth age, after the destruction of Wharf during The Shattering and the disappearance of the then King, Axel Roiyze, it fell to the leaders of individual groups to reform something. During this time, the once independent city of Couthshou entered into talks with the Jaralian Empire to enter into their fold and aid the newly seated Emperor in expanding to cover the rest of Helfdome, and seeing this as an opportunity, the Triton Noble-woman Zygllplyx spoke up and wormed her way into a position to entice the Empire to aid in the reconstruction of her peoples home, both the Triton village and Wharf as a whole.    This lead to the founding of the kingdom, it's three duchies, and Zygllplyx's position as the first Archduchess of New Wharf, a title which her line has held unbroken for approaching two thousand years.

Military

The bulk of New Wharf's military is naval, with a healthy mix of militia riders and spell casters who patrol the outer villages.

Religion

Though there is discrepancies within the Duchy, the Duchy itself does worship the Jaralian Faith but is very liberal and often accepts the practices of both the Triton and Sahuagin depending on the relation to the water any particular settlement may be.

Trade & Transport

Most of New Wharf's trade is done by sea, large trade vessels and escort warships enter and leave its harbour weekly as they are loaded up with goods to return outward.

Education

While the Duchy lacks the raw draw of the universities of northern Kaerendall, New Wharf has access to two well known schools; The Tower of Sparks, a 'wizard' academy that exists in the small hamlet of Lexington that exists to the north-west of the capital, as well as The Galabrae'in Academy; a naval academy in the capital that teaches shipwrights, sailors, and doubles as a military academy for the Duchies home military and foreign naval forces.

Major Exports
Exported out of New Wharf is 'Adhum' or God's Wood; wood harvested from the trees to the south. Beyond this, seal fat, whale bone and oil, and large amounts of fish processed by the many fishermen and fish mongers within the Duchy work to provide a rich export business for the duchy as a whole.
Major Imports
New Wharf relies on external sources for medicine, spices, and a great many other basic necessities to compliment their diet of seafood and grains. A large portion of the duchy is dedicated to farmland but the variety that comes with being a coastal trade hub is invaluable to the nation.
