The two ends of the Trans-Rheuthengage Highway meet in Mennith. At the opening ceremony, soldiers light signal fires, in succession, every ten miles along the Highway. The fire races from Drythe to New Solarin in thirty minutes. A Mennith fundamentalist mars the ceremony by immersing himself in a signal fire outside the gates of Mennith City.
