Yatian Finishing School

When Yaty first gained its independence from the Empire of Eldoria it had a burgeoning merchant class but no nobility. The se merchants had a wealth of gold, ships, and soldiers, but no frame of reference for ruling beyond the laissez faire example set by overseas nobles from the Island of Eldoria. Most agreed that they were not only a poor example of how to govern but also from a model to which the merchants did not want to subscribe. Where nobles valued bloodlines and tradition, the merchants wanted a fair government that rewarded those that had worked hard and found success. After pondering the challenge, they agreed to import some of the finest minds in the Inner Seas to help educate them.

Most of the leaders, however, could not take time away from their businesses to study and so they pushed the problem to their children by establishing a school and sending them. The school did its job and the youth of Yaty took their education and formed what is not perhaps the most egalitarian government on Tarien. So moved were this first generation of students by their years of study, that they petitioned to have the school made permanent so that future generations could benefit from the education. The Yatian Finishing School was born.

While the student body - numbering over five hundred young men and women at last count - still pulls primarily from Yaty, the school serves to educate children of nobility and merchants alike from throughout the Inner Seas. Students spend their five years of study at the school's grounds in the city and receive an education in history, politics, mathematics, literature, philosophy and the social graces, helping to ensure that future generations of Yatian leaders continue to receive the same broad base of knowledge from which to govern. Students generally arrive in their early teens, ensuring that they graduate in time to begin their careers or, in the case of many young women, their marriages.
For centuries, the institution was solely tuition funded - and those tuitions are immense. In recent years, however, administrators of the school have established an alumni relations department to tap into what was already and active social network of graduates. The project has been a success and has generated tremendous revenue from successful former students. This additional revenue stream has allowed the school to both expand its campus and consider additional expanding to upper level studies in order to compete with the University of Karradone.
