Treatise of Gifted and Mundane

Written by Karin of the Scarlett Flame in 593 AC, the Treatise is regarded by many an example of poor scholarship. Filled with flawed arguments about the moral and societal traits of the magi, it attempts to argue that those gifted with the art are elevated beings, closer to the gods, and therefore the rightful masters of Tarien. While not demanding that the continent be populated solely by the gifted, it clearly sees them as the ruling caste, with those not gifted destined to an existence of servitude.

Despite its flaws, the School of Pure and Applied Thaumaturgy published the work. It sold well, especially amongst the nobility who made it a topic of society conversation for a season. Like other sensational works, it quickly faded from public consciousness until Lord Owen Stargazer cited as the reason why he would not swear fealty to the Empire. The public outcry at this act - and his subsequent burning - led directly to the attack on the arcane known as the Mage Wars and the banning of magic from most of the Inner Seas and Azermathia.
