Markum IV Character in Tarien | World Anvil

Markum IV

King of Galencia

A caretaker king of the mid seventh century, Markum IV did little to improve Galencia's standing on Tarien's grand stage. He did continue to allocate funds to the reconstruction of the Cathedral of Arimathica and saw it through to completion. He also had he courage to select Harkin Ironreaver's ambitious plan to reconstruct the Trans-Rheuthengage Highway after an earthquake buried part of it, leading to the now famous 2 league tunnel. Both of these projects drained the coffers of the kingdom significantly, forcing Markum to raise his taxes on imports, fish, and grain, ultimately making him unpopular with noble and peasants alike and earning him the nickname "the broke reconstructionist."
