Davos came from humble beginnings, leaving his father's farm outside of Pendril after his fifteenth winter with nothing but the clothes on his back and a bundle of wool shorn from a half-dozen of his old man's sheep. He may not have asked his father for that wool but he certainly paid him back, with interest mind you. He learned how to spin that wool into cloth by renting time on a second-hand spinning wheel from a blind widow. She showed him how to sew it into plain gray cloaks, her fingers moving by wrote and not needing to see the fabric she was working. He made enough coin on the sale of that simple batch to pay his room and board at the widow's and reinvest.
After a season he could afford to stain his
fingers dying the wool himself and a season later expanded to tunics and simple trousers. A dozen winters later and his fingers no longer ache from working the needle through the coarse wool - he has apprentices for that now - though their stitches are sloppier than he would like. They try hard, though, and their production helps keep silver flowing through his business. He has expanded into a few different styles, including a few that mimic last season's fashions from Grennig and Drythe - as best as he is able, in any event. And while he has his own flat in the Watchful City now, just above his shop, he still has dinner with the old widow every Kingsday.
The wool business certainly pays the bills but his real earnings come from being smart. After setting a side a few coins every Moon, he accumulated enough to start lending it out for a small usury fee. There is no Bank of Karradone in Pendril, after all, and sometimes folks just need a little capital to get started. He had no idea that the Freelancers would demand that he pay a portion of his interest earned for the privilege of doing business, but he could manage it. And while he doesn't like some of the methods they use when one of his borrowers fails to repay their coin, its hard to feel sympathy for the debtors - their story always involves too much ale, gambling or more likely, both.
