The Steppes

The Steppes of Civilization, the largest mountain range on Valerick, this monstrous region is a hostile place, from the freezing cold, to the dark beasts that make it home, to the regions and pockets of tainted land deep within the mountains that still crackle and roil with the fury of the Void's touch. These peaks hold many secrets, yet perhaps hold many ancient treasures. Damnation and fortune, the temptation has led many would be explorers in, though far fewer return. Bestials, Joten, foul Green-skins prowl the peaks, and in areas most foul, even the Dead are Restless. Fell Fey and Dark Kin haunt the caverns and tunnels long abandoned, and though rich mineral and ore deposits may be found, one will likely find all manner of beast and evil creating...complications in mining them. The peaks are prowled by dreaded Winter Wolves, Snow-Lions, and even White Bears hunt the lowlands here, preying on mountain goat, elk, and bighorn sheep. But beasts far more foul, tainted, unnatural, are spoken of as whispers, said to hunt the skies and peaks deep within the mountain range. It is a region of immense danger, though to hear many dwarves lament it, also potentially immense mineral wealth. So it should come as no surprise forays along the fringes have begun, small mining towns striking veins in the lower peaks and crags, timber harvesting villages within the edges of the wooded highland valleys. Slowly but surely, the march into these wild places has begun.
