Port Tiller

This sleepy port town is not known for much in and of itself. On the largest wooded isle in Foljeim Lake, the town gets its name from the known skill of the local boat-maker, one Jerem Tiller. It is a fishing and lumber town, those being the major industries that keep people employed and keep people fed.   However just outside of town, the estate of their laird mayor, one Karlyle Devonshire, is a beautiful sight indeed, and his brewery, Devonshire and Sons. The place is famous in the Evani region for its delightful ales, including regional favorite Foljeim's Whistler, a dark, slightly malty ale with notes of fir, spruce, over a strong base of blueberry and honey.    To the north of the town about 5 kms lies the rather infamous and eerie 'Hospice of Lost Minds' run by one Doctor Olena Grafwood, and her personal staff. The place is the one dark spot nearby and locals generally dont enjoy discussing it.

This port town on Lake Foljeim has, until relatively recently, been a quiet, simple, calm place. A place where sure, you had issues on occasion, but they are hardy folk. They are survivors and they've seemingly figured it out. However, a town that has not had cause to have a visit from a Witch-Hunter in over two hundred years. That was until recently when one Percival Egun showed up. A Witch-Hunter of some forty-eight years he was here for some unknown reason, claiming it wasn't business, even though he was obviously fully armed and expecting trouble. Claimed he was looking for an old friend, Thom Thorne. Whom had recently been committed to the afore mentioned mental instituition. He hasn't been seen in two weeks now, and folk are starting to get concerned. What will happen in Rekarsk, at the regional cathedral and Witch-Hunter garrison when Sir Kartheart's faithful realize Percival is late. When will that be? Whom will they send? This concern is slowly growing.

Demographics

The small village is mostly a mix of human and dwarf of course, but with a smattering of most other races. The numeric breakdown is shown below.

Race Numbers
Dwarf 347
Elf 48
Halfling 215
Human 731
Gnome 149
Vrock 51
Tiefling 66

Government

The village has a five person town council that makes decisions, including of course their Laird Mayor Karlyle Devonshire. Besides Laird Devonshire, you have the Chief of Police Arnold Deiters, the most senior tradesperson connected to a guild in Dagna Varconmac Regark, blacksmith, the local religious leader Bishop Ezaric Vorisgramac Tulmat, and of course as is the customary laws of Suranth, one elector of the town itself, whom currently is one Marigold Evans, a 'human' woman of about thirty years, and owner of the Pike's Head eatery and tavern, a influential local businesswoman with charm and wit. As is the standard in Suranth, her term length is ten years, and she is four years through her term. She may only serve one, even if 'unopposed' the next election she cannot run. If she were to be unopposed, she must name a candidate to take her place.

These five make up the town council of Port Tiller, and handle making decisions as to how to handle and enforce any changes in provincial and federal laws that eventually reach their ears, as well as handling local affairs like tax collections, local economics, logistics, laws, and infrastructure projects. They meet twice a month, unless some sort of emergency forces a third meeting.

Defences

Port Tiller has no federal military presence, that is no full time soldiers are stationed here, though there is a small garrison within her docks, housing the four patrol boats and the equipment of fifty Coast Guard. These river watch men only included thirty true soldiers, so actual Coast Guard whom would be seen as combatants first. The rest are the boatmen, huffers and other important folk necessary to keep such boats afloat and organized both on patrol and well maintained when in docks. These individuals are all locals, no outside officer assigned to them.

This is not to suggest they are undefended. Hunters and woodsmen live on this island and make up a large part of the economy of export of the small town. Men and women good with bow, crossbow or musket, along with men and women whom know their way around an axe. But these are not military troops of course, but skilled militia has its value and such people are hardy and capable of holding their own and defending their own, if nothing else. The Laird Mayor does have a personal squad of guards, twenty whom watch the estate, and the town as a semi-professional military force. They do not act as civil law enforcement, but they patrol the lands around town and keep an eye on the Devonshire estate and business. Half of them will oft be assigned to sail with the lake patrols if there have been recent issues with raids or rumors of wrecker crews, basically bandits of rivers and lakes.

Industry & Trade

Their first and largest industry is that of pine lumber. The pine on this little island is some of the healthiest in the region of the Baruntacht, and the timber and lumber is reknowned for staying straight, being sturdy and pleasant to work with. The town produces lumber and paper from this industry, the main exports. Port Tiller is also known for Devonshire and Sons Brewery of course, and that is another key export, though not of massive volume, the Laird Mayor employs some sixty or more citizens between the brewery and his two lake trade vessels. The lumber yards just outside the village walls employ several hundred of the towns folk in their chain of lumberjack, laborers, coachmen, and dock workers loading the shipments on lake trade barges to travel all about Foljeim Lake and up Foljeim's Path. This small village, a burgeoning town it could seem, and the potential is there, may be a small piece economically to the Evani Baruntacht region, but it is a noticably important one.

Geography

A rather gentle island of sorts in that it is not rocky or craggy, but a clay and soil island, forested heavily.

Natural Resources

Softwood Timber (Mostly varieties of pine and spruce, with a smattering of fir)

A wide variety of fish; lake trout, bass, pike being three of the biggest ones economically and for sustaining the populace.

Wild blue and black berries are common here and harvest as well, for food and export, mostly in liquid (brewery) form.

Caribou, rabbit and otter pelts are valued for their various uses, and a healthy caribou herd does make its home on the island. Hunters in town do not take caribou lightly, indeed it is a group effort amongst the hunting community, and they show more knowledge of their island ecosystem than some might give credit for, aware that with the though their only natural predator is white bear, as occasionally swim across from the mainland or island hop when looking for food, they know that the caribou herd could be destablized if they were to over hunt. They limit themselves to two a year, their pelts used to make warm moccasins for the village for those whom need them, and they always target not the strongest members of the herd, but look to the second or third strongest and healthiest. Moose hunting is even more careful and more of a group activity, as moose too oft swim and island hop or hop from mainland to island and back in the summers. Birds are also hunted, ducks, geese and the like for their meat and feathers for fletching.
