Clan Ironcliffe Organization in Tariek Rough Collection | World Anvil

Clan Ironcliffe

This clan, named for the family whom founded it, and runs it, numbers thousands upon thousands of dwarves spread all about Suranth now, though their ancestral hold and home is Geata-Iarainn. They are miners and that is their foundation and founding, as expert miners and geologists, and as such many dwarves in those industries one may meet will be of Clan Ironcliffe. This fact makes them a valued group in this harsh tundra climate, as tapping into the resources locked beneath the ice and stone is the key to survival and to thriving in such a place, and as such, they hold an important place in Suranthi politics as well, being one of the six clans ordained with the right for their chief to be elected High King, and ordained with the right to a seat on the Conclave of the Clans. That said they are not all nobility, this merely means that the clan name backs them, and generally can be used, with the correct tact and forethought, to push things a little bit in their favor in matters of day to day life, such as getting hired on for a position, or to help 'convince' a land lord that yes you would be a fine and trustworthy tenant. It is a boon that helps all of the clan, regardless of social status or profession, they can always have their clan name to fall back on, and indeed, can always seek help from their fellows.

Structure

Though called a 'clan' in truth it is a little more complex than that. They are a family that has the fealty of other families and groups, and so this leads to them using the term 'clan' most outsiders would call them a 'tribe' or perhaps simply feudal, but it is not quite the same as that either.

Culture

They see the world very straight forward, as do most dwarves. They are innovative and inventive of course, yet they do so in a more traditional sense, not liking or often even not allowing magick or magical means within science, which likely explains why they never stumbled onto the idea of Magntech, the magnetic properties and magic weavings used upon the various rare metals used by the gnomes to make such fantastic things as Sky-Ships work. Even though they've some impressive abundance of such rare ores, which, again because of conservative tradition, they will never admit to selling to Waston, instead taking less profit than they could, and selling it to Susma. Most any dwarf connected to mining or metal industries can tell you where it all ends up, but its one of those unspoken things you never admit. Because the trade rivalry and technological rivalry you never admit openly to doing business. Yet this conservativism does not limit their willingness to grow or change in the ways they find sensible or acceptable. Clan Ironcliffe has embraced, with open arms, this age of industrialization and technology. Smokepowder, Locomotives, and all manner of odd steam and chem-tech items and equipment. Even Magnetech has been.....slightly embraced, with the only Sky-Port currently in Suranth located in Geata-Iarainn.

They are faithful, yet pragmatic, conservative, yet innovative within their sphere of acceptable behaviors and understandings. They don't shun magi, but they also believe that a magister's place is limited in the technological advancement of society. They've a place in war, in national defense, and even in the building or maintaining of certain pieces of infrastructure. But innovation or science? That is not their place, except perhaps in the realm of the esoteric.

Public Agenda

Simply they seek to aid in leading Suranth's growth and prominence on Valerick. Of course this serves their own desire for growth and prominence and status as well.
