Sachan

"A People, A Land, A Culture, A Language, yet never a Country." Is a saying credited to the merchant and scholar Venires Dan Resiree, the quote refers to the land and people of Sachan and remains correct to this day.   The region has for a long time been attributed as something different to the other three primary cultures yet have never really had its own country. The earliest dated mention of Sachan was during 'The First Empire' when the region was simply called "The Great Basin". However unlike the rest of the regions of the first empire after its collapse it has yet to see any long term country, it is rumored that there was a kingdom in Sachan during 'The Elemental Invasion' but during the invasion of the second empire whatever authority existed there had crumbled in the wake of the curse and so Sachan was annexed by Tefaran for just a few decades, before Vanseran rose in the east and beat back the Second Empire claiming the archipelago for the emerging other Empire. This started probably the best period for Sachan post gates as the region became very important and influential within Vanseran, making the cultural phenomena that was Vanseran even more complex. However this golden era ended when Kenirr invaded Sachan in 1326.   When Kenirr invaded Sachan in 1326 they did so as conquerors, the attack was always planned as a way to add more land to what was Kenirr, Sachan was not to be an autonomous territory, Kenirr needed not gold but farmland, something Sachan could offer. In the beginning the war was hard fought and for long it looked like all Kenirr would accomplish was to expand Drekstett to the north, but as the years went by resources was sent north and in time a navy strong enough to carry the army to Laransk was accomplished and with the element of surprise at their side the city quickly fell. It is unknown how or why exactly Sachan and even more so Vanseran could not stop Kenirr. But it is believed that Kenirr simply could afford better weapons and more mages, while Vanseran was, especially after the Dark Invasion, economically weak.   The conquest however was bloody, very bloody. And caused much looting and pillaging on the Kenirrik side to pay the cost of the war, resulting in the centuries of prosperity for Sachan being wiped away as the Kenirrik armies looted, pillaged and in some cases simply destroyed expensive or important structures and after the war was over many of the local nobility was replaced with Kenirrik ones, causing unrest, strife and even more internal instability afterwards as the monsters of the woods and the sea saw the chance to strike this weakened Sachan. It did not help as well that Kenirrik supremacy was on the menu for the lawmakers on the coast and concern for this new threat was small and instead cultural integration was focused as place names became Kenirrik, Laransk became Tamanhelt, Sachan became Sakkan for example. Over time however this nobility would more or less assimilate. This all in all has led to a very slow and unfortunate recovery for Sachan and just as the land was about to recover, the disaster struck.   ‘The disaster at Lekirr’ also sometimes just known as ‘The Disaster’ is an event best covered elsewhere and led to the long Kenirrik civil war that just recently ended. The war in general was like the event that started it a disaster for the general public, this of course included Sachan. It was worse than the Kenirrik invasion was for the land but unlike the invasion the decentralised authority and militarisation that came as a result of it was in one way beneficial for the land. While countless people died and infrastructure got torn asunder the monsters, at least, did not become a problem as armies could still secure the land and local nobility serving only themselves saw a purpose of helping their people in a time where people became more important than land. Sachan now has begun to recover as the war of the two houses between the leaders of Tamanhelt and Zaranhelt has been decided with the destruction of the house of Zaran.   However Sachan is different than before, there is a stronger and more violent Sachani identity one similar to the ‘Marr en Ken’ of the south. And the house of Taman has been willing to appease that identity, even calling themselves ‘Darens of Sachan’ and not Sakkan.
