In Necai both men and women are expected to serve in the military. Women and men are taught to fight. However, it still is very much a male-centered society. If a man wishes to marry a woman he needs the approval of their parents. There are different ways to gain approval. Approval is usually gained by a trial of combat since strength is valued. The woman's family will usually choose the opponent and it is often a strong male within the family like a brother, cousin, brother-in-law, or uncle. If a family doesn't have any males, a woman may fight on the family's behalf.
If the male wishing to gain a woman's hand in marriage has many accolades or a high standing in the military, they can bypass the process completely. Similarly, if the male is wealthy.
