Mental characteristics

Personal history

Ioane was once a soldier in Eouma’s army, known for her recklessness and ambition on the battlefield. In her pursuit of glory and victory, she often made decisions that prioritized the mission at all costs, even if it meant leaving behind the people she was sworn to protect. Though her actions led to many victories, they also resulted in unintended harm to innocent civilians, something she didn’t realize until it was too late.   During one particularly brutal campaign, a mission went wrong, leading to the destruction of an entire village that the army was supposed to protect. The devastation left her reeling, and she began to question whether her drive for success had blinded her to the true consequences of her actions. Wracked with guilt, she abandoned the military life and wandered Eouma, seeking answers.   It was during this time that she encountered a priest of Umbra, the god of justice and consequences. The priest confronted her with the harsh reality: her past actions had caused pain and suffering, and she could either continue to run from her mistakes or face them head-on. Inspired by Umbra’s teachings, the former soldier dedicated herself to justice, vowing to never let her past be repeated. She swore an oath to become a Paladin of Umbra, determined to bring balance to the world and hold both herself and others accountable for their actions.   Now, she roams Eouma as a paladin, offering her strength not for personal gain but to right the wrongs she once caused. She seeks redemption through the consequences she delivers to others, believing that justice is not only a means of protecting the innocent but also a path to healing.

Education

Ioane’s early education focused heavily on military training within Eouma’s structured army academies. From a young age, she excelled in combat tactics, weapon mastery, and battlefield strategy, quickly rising through the ranks due to her sharp instincts and relentless determination. Her formal education emphasized discipline, leadership, and the art of war, leaving little room for philosophy or morality beyond achieving victory.   It wasn’t until after her departure from the military that Ioane’s true education began. Her encounter with a priest of Umbra introduced her to a new form of learning—one rooted in justice, consequence, and introspection. Under the guidance of Umbra’s followers, she studied the tenets of balance, accountability, and the weight of actions, developing a deeper understanding of morality and redemption. This education shaped her transformation into a Paladin of Umbra, blending her martial prowess with a newfound spiritual and ethical framework.

Employment

Ioane’s career began when she enlisted in Eouma’s army as a young recruit. Recognized for her raw talent, ambition, and willingness to take risks, she quickly rose through the ranks. Her early years were defined by grueling physical training and a deep immersion in battlefield tactics, where she excelled as a front-line soldier. Ioane developed a reputation for her decisive leadership and relentless drive to accomplish missions, earning both admiration and caution from her peers and superiors.   As she progressed, Ioane took on roles of increasing responsibility, leading small units in high-stakes operations. Her reckless approach, while effective in achieving military objectives, often pushed her soldiers to the limit and prioritized results over people. This stage of her career marked her transition from a promising recruit to a hardened officer, celebrated for her victories but criticized for her lack of restraint.   The turning point came during a brutal campaign when her single-minded focus on the mission led to the destruction of a village under Eouma’s protection. The unintended harm to innocent lives forced Ioane to confront the consequences of her leadership. Overwhelmed with guilt, she abandoned her military career entirely, disappearing from the ranks and leaving her past behind.   In the following years, Ioane wandered Eouma in search of purpose, surviving through odd jobs and mercenary work while wrestling with her conscience. It was during this time she encountered a priest of Umbra, who helped her confront her actions and offered her a path to redemption. Inspired by Umbra’s teachings, Ioane dedicated herself to becoming a Paladin of Justice and Consequences.   Now, Ioane applies her years of military experience and tactical expertise as a Paladin of Umbra, offering her strength to protect the innocent and hold others accountable. Her work has taken her across Eouma as a wandering agent of justice, delivering consequences to the wicked, defending those in need, and seeking redemption for the harm she once caused. Each mission she undertakes is a chance to balance the scales and prove that her past does not define her future.

Mental Trauma

Ioane carries deep psychological scars from her time as a soldier in Eouma's army. Her trauma is rooted in the decisions she made on the battlefield—choices that prioritized victory at all costs, even when it meant sacrificing innocent lives. The destruction of the village she was sworn to protect was the catalyst for her unraveling. The sight of smoldering ruins, the echoes of screams, and the weight of realizing her role in the devastation haunt her relentlessly. These memories manifest as vivid nightmares and flashes of guilt, often triggered by reminders of war, destruction, or the suffering of others.   Her internal struggle is compounded by a profound sense of self-loathing. Ioane wrestles with the fear that her ambition and recklessness might resurface, leading her to question her own judgment in moments of crisis. This doubt creates a constant tension between her desire to do good and her fear of repeating her past mistakes. She is hyperaware of the potential for unintended consequences in her actions, sometimes to the point of hesitation when decisions must be made quickly.   The teachings of Umbra, while providing her with structure and purpose, have added another layer to her trauma. By accepting justice and consequences as core principles, Ioane forces herself to confront her past rather than suppress it. While this path has given her direction, it also demands that she continuously relive her guilt as a form of penance. She views this as necessary—a burden she must carry to atone for her sins—but it weighs heavily on her mental state.   Despite her struggles, Ioane remains resilient. Her trauma has forged her into someone who deeply values life and justice, though her relentless pursuit of redemption can sometimes border on self-punishment. She fears forgiveness because, in her eyes, forgiving herself might mean forgetting the lessons her pain has taught her. This internal battle shapes her interactions with others: while she is compassionate and protective, she often holds herself at a distance, afraid of forming bonds she believes she does not deserve.   Ioane’s trauma drives her, but it also isolates her, leaving her trapped between the need to right her wrongs and the inability to let go of the past.
