Waterdeep

While the locals may call it a town I would class Waterdeep as rivaling any city in Tronde upon entering, I was taken aback by its splendour. Each building seemed to shimmer in the strong sunlight of a summer afternoon in the south of Talor each covered in mosaics of the finest ceramics and gold leaf filling every crevice it could find. Even the poorest beggar seemed to see gold as some worthless trinket to be discarded at the earliest opportunity. Feeling the evening begin to close and the merchants setting up their stalls ready for the nights festivities I arrived at my room in the lovely tavern known to the locals as the Laughing Dragon. Taking my drink from the bar I proceeded to sit in the cool air outside, jotting in my notebooks and reveling in the tension that is always present before a big party, this one being one of the more famous in Talor, the Night of the Flawed Dawn.

Demographics

Mostly human with some Halflings and a small conclave of Dwarves who have set up shop to help their brethren who use the town as a resting place on their pilgrimage to the site of the God Hammer in the Blue Mountains.

Government

managed by a small council, unlike the rest of the kingdom chosen by lot from the guilded citizens of the town.

Defences

Given the semi regular Orc invasions the town is well defended behind a bulwark eight metres thick and manned by a professional guard who watch for the beacons on the hill that will warn of Orc Patrols, Giants warbands and if the beacon is lit blood red...Dragons.

Guilds and Factions

There are several trade guilds in the city for the major industries, gold, silver, iron over time and finding their voices are louder in large numbers those guilds have joined forces under the Red Cabal that has found its finger in many pies over the years.

History

Part of the old Dwarven Empire of Thirsk it was originally the second city of that empire forming a bastion on its southern border against Orc invasions from the mountain kingdoms of the Kaldor Confederation it was partially destroyed by an unknown army around three hundred years ago and was only saved following an intervention from The Water Queen.   Famous across Talor for its annual light display where for one month stars fall from the sky into the The Blue Mountains beyond culminating in the Night of the Flawed Dawn where the stars coalesce into a single streak that leaves a reddish glow on the horizon for the remainder of the evening

Marble and gold leaf coloured, buildings are limited to five stories save the Temple of the Everlasting Sun.
