The Founding

This era covers the time from the blood oath to create an empire sworn by Calgar Pagitax up to his death, which marks the begining of the official imperial calendar.

    Life, Supernatural

    The warlord Calgar Pagitax swears an oath to the blood god Mars. If he is given the strength to conquer seven cities, then he will build for Mars an altar of skulls the like of which the world has never seen. A short but ambitious oath, one that marked the begining of Calgar Pagitax's campaign of conquest, and ultimately the founding of the Empire.

    The Capture of Cardena - A foundation laid in blood
    Revolution

    The first city to fall to Calgar Pagitax was the one he once served. As a former captain he knew well the layout of the city, its strengths and weaknesses, and the many supporters he had within. As much a revolution as a military action, he led the charge against the tyrant Nereos and his corrupt government and soldiers. The struggle was brief, Nereos and his cronies were hanged, and the foundation stone of the Empire had been laid.

    The fall of Murinium
    Military action

    Moving with surprising speed after gaining control of Cardena, Calgar Pagitax led his troops against Murinium. Many were keen to strike a blow agains their old neighbour and rival, and Murinites were caught off gaurd. A short but bloody conflict brought a second city under Pagitax's control.

    The conquest of Tarcos
    Military action

    After stabilising his rule in Cardena and Murinium, Pagitax turned his forces on Tarcos. Ruled by a merchant council the citizens of Tarcos firmly believed that the revoultion in in Cardena and the fall of Murinium were isolated incidents. They had no quarrel with Cardena or wtih Pagitax. They were not a threat to him, so they believed he had no cause to attack him. They were wrong. The mercenaries employed to protect the city were quick to turn and run in the face of disciplined opposition. The city fell, and Pagitax chose to let the people decide the fate of their former rules. Their failure to protect the city, and the fact that many were caught attempting to flee, was not looked on with kindness.

    The siege of Livini
    Military action

    Five years of peace came to an end when Pagitax laid siege to Livini. The so called city of scholars was no easy target, High in the mountains with limited access, its geography provided natural protection. The city states had learned to be prepared, and the scholars counted mages among their number. It took two years for pagitax and his men to starve the city into submission.

    The battle at Cardenna
    Military action

    With troops tired and hungry from the long siege, Pagitax was forced to march rapidly home as news arrived that Cardenna was under attack. THe remaining city states had seen enough, and were not content to sit idly by and be picked off one by one. Augusta Riga, Arvenna and Vestina had allied and sent troops to capture Cardenna and cut off Pagitax's support. Pagitax's son, Brandar, defended the city against bloody assualts, until his father could arrive to drive the attackers away. While victorious, the action had cost Pagitax dearly, while his attackers cut their losses and retreated.

    the fall of Augusta Rina
    Military action

    It took three years for Pagitax to bolster his forces and consolidate his defences. Then, he marched rapidly on Augusta Rina. Other city states moved rapidly to assist their ally, hoping to trap Pagitax and his forces between the city and two attacking armies. Instead, Augusta Rina fell with surprising speed. It turned out that Pagitax had not only been improving his military, he had also placed agents and secured allies within Augusta Rina's walls. The fighting was bloody with heavy losses on both sides, as Pagitax sacrificed troops for speed, ensuring the city fell before help could arrive.

    the battle of bones
    Metaphysical / Paranormal event

    As the forces of Arvenna marched towards Augusta Rina, intent on destroying Pagitax and his army while they were still weak, they encoutered a grisly fate. An army of undead, risen from nearby battlefields descended upon them in the dead of night. A brutal and unexpected attack by an army from beyond the grave scattered the terrified Arvenans. Many died, but many more fled, ignoring their commanders calls to rally.   It is rumored that this attack was initiated by the necromancer Master Edas, at the request of Pagitax himself, though the official historical accounts deny this.

    Life, Crime

    On the orders of Calgar Pagitax, the necromancer Master Edas is exiled from the empire, on pain of death, for the use of necromancy and the attack on the Arvenan army.

Marked by uncertainty and internal conflict for the throne, the blood years covers the first century of the empire, an age when the empire was still establishing its identity.

    the first civil war
    Revolution

    Dudorian Hardhand, a great grandson of Calgar Pagitax, leads a revolution against the Emperor Salmus Promidius, with the suppor tof the senate. Eventually he storms the palace and kills the emperor, taking his place on the throne.

    Religious event

    Poseidon is recognised as a God of the Empire.

    the Coup
    Revolution

    The emperor Brandar Pagitax is replaced in coup by his cousin, Lothelius Duridimus, with the support of the senate and the priests of Luna.

The Golden Age

An Age of peace and prosperity marked by the establishment of the decatheic church and the reign of Procus the Pious and Julia Pagitax, regarded as the greatest peace time Emperors.

    The establishment of the Decatheic church
    Religious event

    The pantheon of the Decatheic church is established in the Empire. Mars, Luna and Poseidon have already been recognised as gods of the empire. Now Glym, Demeter, Morkana, Nemesis, Janus, Venus and Hephastus are also reconised as imperial gods. This a major theological shift for the empire, and due to its ultimate expansion, for the continent. Conflict between those that worhipped these gods is dramatically reduced.

The age of misfortune

Noted for the catastrophic rule of Uclemacles, and the inept emperor Valcus, this age saw much strife for the empire.

    A terrible plague known as the weeping death sweeps across the empire, killing tens of thousands.

    A tidal wave crushes the city of Arvenna, drowning most of the inhabitants and destroying most of the buildings. Rumours begin that Poseiden is angry witht he emperor Uclemacles

    The founding of the Order of the Rose
    Founding

    The Order of the Rose, a small and secretive organisation is created by concerned senators. Its express purpose is ensuring that no emperor should ever become a threat to the survival of the empire.

The age of the Antiniums

The reign of the Antinium family saw a transfer of power from the Emperors to the senate, until the reign of the mad Emperor Travian II prompted a bloody coup.

    Life, Career

    Eperor Travian Antinium had a very acute interest in the affairs of state. Unfortunately, he was paranoid and thought that everyone was plotting against him. He initiated a number of purges within the senate, military, clergy, and his own family. His reign of terror lasted nine years, until he was killed in a bloody coup d’etat.

The age of Light and Shadow

An age dominated by the war against the dark elves saw the reign of Magnus the Lightbringer, one of the most revered emperors, and his niece Julia II, who rebuilt much of the empire after the war.

    The war against the dark elves
    Military action

    The Empire is invaded by Dark Elf forces from Niflheim. Posessing skilled troops and formidable magic, the dark elves are an enemy like no other the Empire has faced. Led by the dark elf champion Asumurath, they battle their way to very gates of Cardena. Emperor Procus iV is slain by Asumurath in the conflict, but ultimately avenged by his brother, Emperor Magnus the Lighbringer, who drives the dark elves back to Niflheim and slays Asumurath.

    Life, Career

    Following the death of Julia II her twin sons, Siros and Seruban agree to rule the empire jointly.  It is agreed that the firstborn son of either of the two emperors will be the next heir to the empire.

The age of Joy and Sorrow

The reign of the twin emperors was one of prosperity and expansion, but ultimately led to the civil war that followed the death of Seruban Pagitax.

    The conquest of Beuland
    Military action

    Following the peaceful aquisition of Belgac as a vassal state, the empire raises taxes on Beulander merchants passing through its major city port. Protests by the merchants escalate into violence, which is met in kind by imperial forces garrisoned there. Beusland responds with a large detachment of knights. The empire cannot risk any course that appears to show that it is not fully committed to the protection of its vassals and so war breaks out. With Louvron, king of Beuland unwilling to even consider surrender, the war only ends when imperial legions invade and conquer Beauland.

    The civil war
    Military action

    Julian Pagitax, son of Siros becomes emperor following the death of his uncle. His cousin Procus disuputes the claim, attempting to seize the throne on the grounds that his father was the last emperor. The empire is thrown into a bloody civil war.

    The trials of Jero
    Diplomatic action

    The high priest of Janus, Jero proposes a solution to the ongoing civil war. Both candidates must submit themselves to ten trials, each set by the High Priest of each of the gods of the Decatheic church. The two cousins agree, and Julian emerges victorious.

The age of Empire

An age that saw the greatest level of growth through the conquest of Rhaneland and Aldremere.

    the conquest of Rhaneland
    Military action

    Despire becoming part of the empire many years ago, Rhanelander Barons have never ceased feuding with their Beulander neighbours, often over age old grudges. Driven by a desire to expand the empire and to keep any ambitious generals away from the imperial throne, Cassimidius II uses these incidents as a pretext to war. He orders imperial troops to attack Rhaneland. The battles through wooded and mountainous terrain are long and hard, and the Rhanelanders are used to war. Eventually, and with a grudging respect for the Empires power, King Helmark agrees that Rhaneland will become a vassal in exchange for the safe return of prisoners, the retaining of certain rights and customs, and the continued rule of his family.

    The conquest of Aldremere
    Military action

    Seeking to further expand imperial territory, and wary of any possible pact between Aldremre and the Norse, Clovar Pagitax orders the invasion of Aldremere. It is a bitter and miserable campaign and guerilla action by the Aldrim accounts the the greater part of imperial losses. The invasion paves the way for the extermination of the druids for their practice of blood sacrifices.

The modern age

Begining with the reign of the current Emperor, Ladrius Pagitax, this age has seen unprecedented overseas gains in the form of the crusade against the Jewelled Kingdoms.

    the crusades begin
    Religious event

    The execution of three priests of Glym in the Emirate of Rambir provokes a crusade by the empire against the Jewelled Kingdoms and their god, Illahn. A military undertaking like no other, led by the zealot Tobias de'Vantrey the empire diverts legions of troops to the Jewelled Kingdoms, sacking their capital, the white city, and overthrowing and executing the Emir.

    Metaphysical / Paranormal event

    A powerful Faerie, known as the Fool, attempts to sieze control of Aldremere, and cloaks it in terrible freezing snowstorms that threaten to kill off the populace.

    the Dark Elves return
    Military action

    The dark elf champion Asumurath has returned from the grave, and the dark elves once again attack the empire. The erruption of mount Attar creates a vast cloud of darkness under which an army of dark elves, orcs, trolls and drider can attack. For the first time on over 500 year, Cardenna. the heart of the empire, falls.

    Celestial

    The dark elves carry out a terrible ritual, the sacrifice of a god. Using the magic of Glym, Mars, and Posseiden, the dark elves seek to drown the sun itself in a sea of blood. Glym is slain, and with each passing the day, the sun now grows weaker.
