Mooniyaang

Government

All codified relationships here in the northern capital of NAN are defined by treaties.

What might elsewhere be considered tourist and business visas, here are personal treaties between the individual visitor and the city government.

Trade relationships intended to continue over a period of time beyond a single transaction, are defined by a treaty between the involved business interests. (These treaties are subject to the greater treaty between each business interest and the area government. Do not violate the terms of the greater treaty! Remember to pay any relevant taxes as early as possible! Otherwise, a broken treaty with the ruling body may result in severe penalties, such as a rather lopsided war.)

The general guiding principle of law in this city is that each person is their own governing body, and should be respected as such. One may choose to loan one's self-governance to a greater body in return for certain considerations. These loans are never permanent. The purpose of the citizenship treaty (and, by extension, the visitor's treaty) is to have a plainly stated agreement for a code of conduct by which all involved parties will behave.

Districts

  • Gesapsgel -- primarily Mi'qmaw district, on the central eastern coast of the largest island, currently the smallest of the districts.
  • Hochilaga -- primarily ethnic Wolastoqiyik' district, at the base of the mountain, essentially the center of the city.
  • Kanata -- primarily ethnic Quendat district, on the southwest and central southern section of the archipelago, containing some of the most lucrative markets on the entire seaway.
  • Kébec -- primarily ethnic Anicinàpe district, on the northeastern side of the archipelago, including part of the main island and all of the small islands on the seaward edge where all rivers rejoin.
  • Stadacona -- primarily ethnic Anishinaabeg district, on the western section of the main island and nearby marshy Osekare island, with a majority permanent population who emigrated here from the inland freshwater sea they call "Gitchi-gami".
  • Tiohtià:ke -- primarily ethnic Haudenosaunee district, on the southeast section of the island and part of the eastern coast, including the nearby smaller islands on that side of the river bend.

Points of interest

Managed by administrators from the Haudinosaunee, the small woodland island to the southeast of the main island is the designated temporary residence for all short-term visitors (and non-citizens are by definition "short-term visitors"). The island is labeled "Verdun" on Roman maps, but seems to have no specific name to which the local government will commit.
The island has no current or historic defenses against potential warfare.
Eight sturdy longhouses on this island are maintained by municipal administration. One contains all governmental services, including official representation of the Council for submission of treaties or treaty amendments.
A second (on the northerly end of the island) and third (on the southern tip) serve as indoor trading lodges, resistant to fire and squalls so that visitors may engage in healthy commerce regardless of the weather.
A fourth trading lodge near the center of the western coast is reserved as a long-term temporary residence for Mooniyaang locals who prefer to not cross the channel to the main island.
The remaining four longhouses are operated privately, renting out apartments to pairs of visiting families.
For those who prefer more privacy, or who arrive at a time when all available apartments are already in use, a slim majority of land on this island is designated as embassy-style campgrounds. No permanent structures can be built, even with a solid treaty arranged beforehand. However, "permanent structure" in this case means a building that remains upright for more than four summers.
Place names and ethnic origins in this article are inspired by the real-life cultures who originally existed in the northern and eastern regions of this continent. No direct affiliation to real persons or organizations is intended or implied.
