Kanaloa Character in Tales of Arbitrium | World Anvil

Kanaloa

Unto the sea, we all perish

Kanaloa was a giant squid made after The Event, made by Dogra to assist in the beings of his that were being hunted. It was given the ability to swim in the Astral Sea as well as normal waters, but also to fly across the sky when need be. It was with Kanaloa's powers that Dogra's Playground was created, in that it's one of the few places that Dogra's creations will always be safe. This was also in part to a deal made with Tsukuyomi to create a space for her Hunters, or her Ryoshi, to hunt his beasts for sport without poaching.   However, after a few hundred years, Kanaloa wanted more responsibility and to tend to dead people, of which Tsukuyomi agreed rather easily. Thus, came the stories of beings ascending off the surface of their world via a light or by having their spirits collected. Kanaloa was exceptional at ferrying the dead spirits and allowing their energy to redistribute across the planes. However, in time, there was a religion based on Kanaloa, how unbias he was, and the imagery of a ferryman taking those across a river of sticks was created. This, was where the trouble began for Kanaloa.

Banishment

Within a short time period, as in 400 to 500 years, the religion took notice by other gods, who would then swoop in to talk Kanaloa out of ferrying the dead. Kanaloa rejected the notion, stating that this was his purpose, which would lead to a conflict that took place within the Astral Sea. A fight that broke the surface of the moon for Hades and the Feywilds, Kanaloa would eventually find himself banished to the Astral sea that he could sail across, only able to commune and visit the worlds that are outside of these god's reaches. While at first, he was angry, and even furious, with this notion, he would find himself in these other planes that were sealed off. Where he would serve under many different names, including The Kraken and Eleskede. He would then find himself being betrothed to Hel of Ygdrasil, who also found a fascination with the world of the dead, eventually becoming close friends with Osirus of one particular planet. Here, abilities to work around the dead were adored and preferred, allowing him to be the entity to ferry those into their next lives.

Unjust replacement

During the year 563 AE in the Material Plane, Kanaloa discovered that the position of dealing with the dead had been replaced by Allura, who notably had little idea of how to manager her Abyss. Enraged, he reached across the planes and exited his banishment to try to take his position back, only to be met with the violence of the gods that remained in this plane. In response, he showed all his power in a war dubbed the War over the Cotton Sea, which decimated merfolk populations. Right when one individual was going to slay him, he managed to be pulled back by Hel who refuted his actions as they perverted the rules of dealing with the dead. It was here, he received a message from another deity who was imprisoned, asking for just a sliver of his power to create "A Scruge", of which Kanaloa agreed, and allowed another god to use his power temporarily to break out of his own confinement. Only, he would discover this god to take more than they should have, and now wished to come back to the Material Plane peacefully to resolve his mistake.
