Vulpini Species in Summerdark | World Anvil

Vulpini (Vul-pin-ee)

Journal of Danrion Uave,

It feels odd writing about your own bloodline. What your people’s ancestry is like its a bug you found on a stump. But, I felt I should start this journal somewhere and writing about the ancestry of my own people seems a good place to start.

The vulpini, or the ‘vulpini bloodline’. An ancestry I know all too well, since I’m one of them.

Vulpini are one of the many beast-folk found in the Summerdark lands. This species is most commonly found in the northern Abjeck mountain range or in the wide, ancient Mistgrove Forest nestled in the lowland regions. They have called those regions home since the Last Alliance and the War of Death’s Fall drove them from their ancestral home along the shores of the Fordheim Sea.

Nimble and quick, the wiry vulpini are known for their agility, thin stature, and excellent hearing. But their size can be misleading as many vulpini are as strong, if not stronger, than humans or even some of the broad-shouldered, rugged skarn.

Physical Characteristics

They are a unique humanoid species. A hybrid of human and fox with features drawn from both. Regarding height and weight, they stand five and a half feet to five foot nine inches tall with a naturally lean frame of about 170 pounds on the average. Vulpini are covered in fur that covers a broad range of colors from red and orange to silver and gray.

This species has fox-shaped heads with large, expressive ears capable of detecting even the faintest sounds. Vulpini also have bushy tails, which are essential for their sense of balance and a means to express emotion. Eyes come in a wide range of colors, such as black, brown, green, orange, and red.

The most noticeable aspect of their hybrid nature is their hands and feet. A vulpini’s fur-covered hands are like a human, with four fingers and a thumb. They do have claws, but they are small and stubby, not sharp, as many tend to believe. In contrast, their feet are large fox paws, a little wider than they are long to support their upright, bipedal stance.

Compared to other species, the vulipini have a keen sense of smell and hearing. Their hearing, in particular, makes them formidable hunters and talented scouts. But their eyesight is no better than what the average human possesses.

Dietary Habits and Needs

Vupinian physical characteristics are reflected in the dietary needs of the species. This species is an opportunistic omnivore, thriving on both a diet of animal and plant-based foods. This mix gives them a great deal of flexibility in their food choices, which allows them to adapt to different environments.

For animal-based foods, the species prefers small game, birds, eggs, and fish. Despite these carnivorous leanings, vulpinians consume a significant amount of plant-based foods. Fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes top the list. More complex plant-based foods like breads, pastas, and other prepared dishes aren’t unheard of and showcase the capacity and creativity of various vulpini cultures.
