Where to go from here? Report

General Summary

The party, having rested following their imprisonment at the hands of the Ashmedai cult, enjoyed some card games and drinking in the inn. Bawub retired, but a human monk named Freyja joined the group.   Munnin, sorely feeling the lack of a proper set of Thieves' Tools, made notice in Thieves' Cant to find someone who could sell her a set. She was contacted and told to go to the House of the Haunted Hill tavern after dark. When the time came, fearing entanglements if accompanied by the rest of the party (especially Nak'Cue, whom she suspects is too naïve and straight-laced), she departed for the tavern with only Petal. They were greeted by the tiefling door warden who greeted them warmly, but with a warning to remain well-behaved. They waited at a table until their barmaid server indicated they'd been asked to go upstairs to Demetrius' room.    Upstairs, they met Demetrius, a sharp-eyed human man of middle years, who moved with almost extreme economy of motion. Utilizing her psychic link, Munnin explained her need and Demetrius set out the tools before her. He began the negotiation at 50 estinonii, twice the value of such a set. Munnin refused and countered with 25, which Demetrius accepted.    After a brief conversation about why they would need such tools, Demetrius asked if they would do a job for him. A certain mage named Ilusius of the Wand had, as his name implied, a wand hidden in a chest in his tower-house. The job was to infiltrate the house, replace the wand with a duplicate and slip away without leaving evidence of their crime. Pay would range between 4,500 and 7,500 estinonii, commensurate with their performance. The two agreed to his terms.   Returning to the party, they explained the job to their team mates, who all seemed eager to participate. The next day, Nak'Cue and Freyja investigated the dead drop for signs of betrayal or reconnaissance by third parties. Several others visited the library, poring over old records to find out what they could about Ilusius or his home. They discovered a blueprint from its construction, but little else. Upon returning to the tavern, one of the party remembered that the name Ilusius was associated with a criminal group in Estinople called the Opal, which specialized in the theft and illegal sale of relics, rarities, works of art, and the like. Another name often associated with the Opal is Demetrius.   That night, understanding their job to be a test of some kind, they arrived at the house in the earlier hours of darkness. After Nak'Cue and Ozymandias briefly investigated the first and third floors, discovering wards on several doorway thresholds, several members of the party entered the third floor through a window. Munnin attempted to pick the lock to the treasure room, but triggered a poison needle trap, instead, which she resisted. Nak'Cue used his wild shape to enter the room through a crack under the door and unlocked the door from the inside. The chest within was unlocked, so the party took the wand, closed the chest, reset the lock and trap on the door and escaped into the night.   The next night, after making their dead drop, the Petal and Munnin again visited the House of the Haunted Hill and met with Demetrius, who paid them 6,000 estinonii for their work. He indicated that further work might be forthcoming, if they were interested.   As the party relaxed in the tavern following their payday, there was a loud CRACK, as the veil between planes was briefly opened and two horned devils appeared. One of them said in common, "Our mistress has commanded your deaths."
