The Trident of Tides

So long ago that magic using elves and dragons have turned to dust in times passage, The thee powers over water for they were not even called gods then; Orren, Ravan, and The Black Hag or Deep One as some call her, had not yet warred with one another and they came together to create the Trident of Tides. The trident is said to have the the ability to control the tide, the currents, and even the storms of the seas and oceans.   Not long after it's creation The Deep One tried to raise the waters of our world and drown all the lands and people. That is when Orren and Ravan came to the rescue of the people of our land. For much as dark has no meaning without light, the water has no meaning without land. The Gods who hold dominion over water turned on the Deep One and bound her in the deepest trench in the ocean. Placed with chains of coal and fire that burn even underwater. She gave a prophecy that should she ever rise from the deep, should she escape... She would drown the world and the other two wouldn't be able to stop her this time. The trident was granted in times of need to avatars of Ravan and Orren. Giving dominion over all waters to its barer. In the old stories it was used mostly for the sake of hunting down and destroying the followers of The Deep One. Her power was broken and few know of her beyond the tale of how it relates to the trident.   The trident has not been seen in millennia, many now question if such a powerful thing could exist. Stories aside. No magic even wielded by covens of magi or groves of druids can control the tide or currents in more than a tiny area when one considers the vastness of the ocean.

Summary

On the assumption that even the gods need to put things someplace a pirate name Cirano (self titled "the sea wolf"), decided that not only was the trident real, but that he was going to find it. The myth states that he spent a long time looking (this may or may not have taken place around the time of the first elven expansion and depending on who is telling the tale, where you are, and which versions they have read Cirano's species changes and to reflect that the number of years he spent looking before he finally found the remains of the water gods last champion in the fight to extinguish the deep one's followers.   From there the tale (differing on region and tale teller) speaks of how he had to go over land and to the well spring that makes a great river (that may or may not appear first as a waterfall coming out the side of a mountain) where he found the writings of the last champion and a few more hints as to where the champion had retrieved the trident from.   Teh story then tells of how he tracked the legend to an island where his crew finally believed in him, or at least in the trident he had been looking for between acts of piracy and looting. They then betrayed him and tried to kill him (the exact manner usually being a reflection of the most popular method attributed to pirates at the time of the writing or the story teller). He manages to escape though some feat of guile or supernatural strength and then kills all the crew left aboard the ship taking it back.   He either then kidnaps a set of native islanders from near by, finds a genie and wishes for a new crew, or sails the entire ship himself depending on the variation and one could also assume the knowledge to ignorance ratio of seamanship held by the chronicler/storyteller. Cirano then sails away for about three years and then comes back to find his crew murdered each other or are repentant. In the latter case very few iterations have him forgive them, usually he kills all of them in the manner they attempted but failed to kill him with.   He then scours the island looking for the hidden resting place of the trident. Instead he finds the training ground for the chosen champion and details on how the trident is to be controlled. From there he sails to the center of the oceans (where this mythical center of all water might be is never told) where he explores the water gods own islands. There he finally discovers the resting place of the trident.   Cirano goes on to use the trident to become one of the most successful pirates ever and gain wealth beyond his imagination (most pirates can imagine quite a bit so I find this part to be even less realistic than the rest) where in he sailed back to the center of the ocean, puts the trident back (even more unlikely for a pirate) and retires to a life of luxury.

Historical Basis

The first and second mate in the original myth were a set of twin halfling brothers that Cirano trusted implicitly. Many believe that the tomb uncovered outside Villa Guardare Su, which had a large amount of treasure interred with the dead and some evidence of pirate memorabilia. This has led many to think that Cirano the Sea Wolf, even if he didn't have legendary magic items may have been a real historical figure rather than just a children's tale.   No 'center' of the ocean has even been documented on any sea chart nor has any other hard evidence of the trident nor the pirate Cirano been found.

Spread

The tale has been well written and told many times. It's more classic adventure tale than myth or fable these days. The story has been rewritten to make Cirano either a villian or a hero at times and the better written ones show him as both. With the escapes, betrayals, strange sea monsters appear sometimes, and the lure of god like power... the tale has always been popular in various ports and about the time it dies out in one it comes back in a new rendition from another port in another country and it catches the minds and imaginations of children and drunken sailors all over again.
