Luna

The moon over earth, often called The Moon is officially designated Luna as a means of separating it from the orbital body type. Luna remains officially divided between the United Earth Sphere, and segments occupied by the Human Elevation Foundation and house many many military and civilian populace.

Geography

Luna's a barren world of silver colored sock and dust and no attempt to terraform it has been undertaken both because of the difficulty of the task and the damage doing to would have on the biosphere of earth. As such the geography of Luna has not changed much from the twentieth century. The only major changes are the cities and bases that cover much of the moon along with the heavy helium-3 mining that takes place on the surface. Visible from earth along with the speckles of cities are massive scaring and damage from the Battle of the Beijing Miracle which has often been described as looking like claw-marks.

History

Luna is one of the first world to have been colonized. Primarily in the early days of the UES in which is was primarily seen as a vacation spot and industrial site. Due to its lessor gravity it became a popular space for ship construction, allowing larger vessels that could not be built in earths atmosphere and expected to escape could be built on the Moon. Along with ship construction, Helium-3 was and still is a popular export, allowing easier and cheaper nuclear energy on earth which was key to shifting the earth from oil based consumption.
As the golden age came into full swing, Luna's importance diminished some. Large orbital construction platforms could out-preform the moons own shipwrights. It's Helium-3 mining became increasingly less efficient than other fissionable materials. Instead a more residential focus took over. People who could afford it would prefer living on Luna over stations, and many smaller uses became popular such as gene and seed vaults.
The threat of the Xenophage became in many ways a revolution on Luna as the moon's resources became more desirable and is position near Earth made it a natural military base. This would become even more so as the Battle of the Beijing Miracle used Luna has a massive space fortress, covering it win hard-points and weapons platforms.
Though after that Luna has become a tense place. Though still mostly in the hands of the UES much of the surface has become occupied military bases and refitting/refueling stations for the Foundation. This tension has also lead to the moons increasing militarization and divided loyalties of those whom call it home.

Tourism

While popular in the early days of the space age, in modern times it is seen as a Industrial base and an utterly undesirable place for tourism. However, small amount of it is focused on scenic views of earth, yet even that is minor.
