For your hardwork, determination and strength of will, you have been granted the role of journeywalker; we trust you to bring yourself and your friends home safely...
An adventurous Folk
Strions are an adventuring people with a never-ending curiosity for the world around them. From a very early age, they will go on adventures with their families, often traveling for many hundreds of miles to find resources or new information. However, until they are an adult, they are never allowed to travel without supervision because even though so much is known about their world, it is still dangerous.Coming of age
When a Strion comes of age, they are ready for their first great adventurer. They and their friends are sent out into the wilderness with only one goal: to discover something no-one has ever seen before. They could be gone months, or even years (as is becoming increasingly common), so they must rely on the friendship and community among eachother to reach their goals. This is where the journeywalker comes in, they are the one who must unite their band of friends, govern decision making, and is responsible for making sure that their friends arrive home in one piece.
Role and Responsibility
The Title Giving Ceremony
Every year, a ceremony is held for the newest group of Strions who have come of age. There is music, dancing and a large celebration by their friends and families. During this ceremony, the Journeywalker is selected and the goal of their adventure is chosen. The journeywalker is decided upon by a representative of the community. They pick the young Strion who they believe is the most responsible, resilient, and able to lead, because with this Strion in charge, the adventure is the least likely to fail.
Associated Tasks
The Journeywalker who has been chosen is responsible primarily for the navigation of the group of adventurers, but alongside this, they are also responsible for the group as a whole and all of their decision making. The group can only make a decision if the journeywalker agrees, so whoever is chosen must be trusted to be impartial and fair. This however, can be very emotionally challenging for the chosen Strion because the outcome of the journey rests entirely on their shoulders.
Notable Journeywalkers
Meena
Meena lead a group of adventurous young Strions to the discovery of Mudstone back when Strions were still a very young species. This discovery advanced building technology very quickly, and allowed the Strions to build houses and buildings that could protect them from the planet's harsh weather.
Fairweather
Fairweather was one of the first Journeywalkers whose adventuring party never returned. Their task was to discover a new form of edible plant, which other adventurers had told tales of seeing before. However, in the groups eagerness to discover it, they accidently ate a poisonous plant instead and they didn't return alive from their journey...Glassborn and Halfwinter
Glassborn and Halfwinter were the first Strions to both hold the title of Journeywalker at the same time. At the time of their adventure, there was much debate in the community about who would be picked because they both had the qualities deemed necessary to be given the title. Eventually, the community representatives decided that they should share the title as their skillsets complimented eachother and would lead the adventure to success.
Spark
Spark's adventuring part overhauled they way Strionan society functioned (and gave them their name) with their discovery that they could use the electricity from the lightning storms that frequent strion. This allowed Strions to heat and light their homes and caused advances in science. Because of this, Spark's adventure is considered one of the most successful in Strionan history.Cultural Significance
Strions who receive the role of journeywalker as an adolescent often go on to hold leadership roles within their communities or jobs later in life. Both because they hold the necessary skills to manage and communicate with large groups of people, but also because the title looks impressive to those around them. There are some Strions who feel that it is unfair that only one Journeywalker is selected from the roughly one hundred young Strions who come of age each year. Particularly when this role can be gained to earn positions of authority later in life, which many other Strions would be equally qualified for. However, others argue that taking on the role of Journeywalker benefits the individual with skills and experiences shared with very few others that can vastly improve their leadership abilities.Table of Contents
