The Works

Choked with thick black smoke and the ceaseless noise of industry, The Works is working heart of Spire. Most of what is made in the city is made here by countless downtrodden Drow workers, both indentured and those who are barely managing to scrape enough sten together to feed their families. Entire city blocks are taken up by sprawling factories, warehouses, and cramped tenement buildings. Almost every printing press in Spire operates out of The Works, even posh Aelfir publications like Masque!.  Spireblack, a cheap greasy combustible substance that can be found only in Spire, grows like industrial moss here, and is scraped up by destitute creatures to be sold by the bagful.  Spireblack has quickly become the standard alternative to the far more expensive (and more reliable) human engineered gunpowder.
