The Undermarket

Written by Herobot

Overview

The Undermarket is run by The Myriad, and is located in the heart of The Warrens. Contained with a single massie cavern with hundreds of tunnels leading to it from various areas of the Warrens, the Undermarket is the largest single market square on Bastion. Winding pathways lined with merchant stalls meander throughout the cavern, seemingly without order. Pathways cross over each other, abruptly terminate, or lead to open squares without pattern. Some of the shops seem to have been haphazardly constructed on top of other shops when the market ran out of space.

Districts

Gloomlane

Gloomlane is home to the more desperate and poor of the shopkeepers. Whether because they have fallen out of favour with the Myriad, suffer from substance addiction, or been handed the short end of the stick in life, the people here appear quite run down and the shops have goods of only the most common variety, many of which are old and beaten up.

The Old District

The Old District is where the long time Myriad friends have their shops. This district has a lot of people from off world, as well as those of import from Bastion itself. Shops here have higher quality items in a wider variety, and appear generally more well maintained.

Duskrown

The Duskrown District is a district specifically focused on items of a more magical nature. Many of the shopkeepers here are of a more magical or Fey nature themselves, and this is the place to go if you're looking for potions, enchanted or cursed items, or other things of that nature.

The Tower

The Tower is where Myriad members proper set up shop. It is also the district where members of the elite class, government officials, and other people of import will go if they need to buy something, or are looking to sell something. The defenses for the Undermarket are also coordinated out of this district

Shops

Syrindel's Secrets

Duskrown District

The 400 year old Shadar-Kai elf named Syrindel Vilaria. She dresses in long dark cloaks that cover much of her body with large hoods, but in her shop where she feels safe she removes the cloaks, revealing black leather armour that comes to wicked looking points at all of the edges. Her greaves are the same leather, but also wrapped in chains. Her skin is a pale alabaster, and her eyes lack sclera, and have no defined pupil, they are just black. The shadows around her seem to cling tight against her body. She wields two Leybolt hand crossbows and a scimitar. She gives off a faint aura of undead. He voice is soft and whispy, with a slight english accent. She has a creepy persona, and her views and morals have clearly been skewed by her time spent in the Shadowfell. Her mind is not fully there, and she sometimes talks to herself or forgets what's going on.

Special Items

Syrindel hunts for items throughout the Shadowfell, as well as in the darkest, most remote corners of the system, and her goods reflect that. Everything in the shop is magical to some extent, but there is a range of more mundane trinkets. But they look like they are from somewhere else. Their design often seems occult, or forboding in nature, often made depicting dark imagery.

Roll a D20 when generating shop items. If the die rolls below the party level, roll a d100 on the evil items chart.

The Myriad Market - General Goods

The Tower District

The Myriad Market is owned and operated by the Myriad themselves. The shop front is run by a panther-presenting Tabaxi named Shadow of Valleys (Shadow). His fur is jet black and appears meticulously well kept, smooth and glossy. He is dressed in rich looking dress clothes of a dark grey, with a deep red, hooded waistcoat. His voice is soft and low, and he flows between syllables very smoothly, and speaks with the lexicon of an educated man. He comes across as aloof and arrogant, with little patience for wasted time. The Myriad Market is a general goods store, selling mundane and everyday tools, foodstuffs, and travel equipment. However, it is also the premiere fencing location on all of Bastion. For those who are known and trusted, a large selection of under the table supplies are available for less-than-legal activities, as well as a myriad of stolen goods.

Mundane Items

Jo'Shar's - Apothecary

Gloomlane

Jo'shar's takes its name from the owner, a 48 year old, elderly Kenku named Jo'shar Kiro. She appears bedraggled, with ruffled, poorly kept feathers, and moves about with a pronounced stoop, even for a Kenku. She has a croaky, strained voice, but she is extremely friendly despite her apparent lot in life. The art of brewing potions, elixirs, and other herbal substances is highly regulated by the Coalition. Considered one of the greatest cutting edge apothecarians on Bastion, Jo'Shar was banned from practicing after a series of illegal, unsanctioned experiments on new substances went awry. Having lost her ticket and fallen to poverty, she eventually found herself in the arms of the Myriad, down here, free to experiment to her hearts content.

Fiona's Fineries - Jewelry and Clothing

Old District

Fiona Faraday is a very well put together human woman. She dresses in beautiful flowing gowns and adorns herself in very in-your-face jewelry. The daughter of a once proud, now disgraced Guild noble, Fiona was raised in the Imperial Promenade on the traditions and customs of culture and class. She believes herself above everyone in the Undermarket, and she is only here running this shop until she can clear her family name and return to an above board business. She has great business cunning and is a shrewd dealer.

Special Items

When visited by the party, she will have a small, random assortment of specialty jewelry and clothes that has a neat story

Mundane Items

She carries a wide variety of clothing and simple jewelry. All non-magical.

The Astral Forge

Old District

Owned by the gnome blacksmith Jebben Verkeer, an old gnome that moves about with the slow, pained gait of one who shouldn't be able to smith, yet when the tools find his palm his vigor returns. He is always wearing a dirty tunic and work pants with a heavy leather apron over top. His voice is that of a shaky old man, and he is very kind at first, but he is extremely quick to anger. He has lived a long and difficult life, and now he's jaded and lacking in patience. He has an array of small automatons that help organize the shop, work on simple tasks, and transport goods.

Special Items

Roll on a randomizer table for non-magical weapons of interest, such as collectors weapons, and artfully crafted stolen goods.

Mundane Weapons

If it's in the weapons and armour list, he will have it or can make it.

Cornelius' Charming Curios

Duskrown District

Cornelius Abaro's shop can be a dizzying experience for those unfamilar with the arcane arts. But if you need something magical, or you're looking for an enchantment, you'll find none better. As long as you're not looking for friendly customer service.

Special Items

For any magic items of a Legendary rarity, roll a d20. If the roll is 15 or higher, he has some legendary items available.

Mundane Items

If there is an item related to magic, casting, scroll-making, or any other for of the arcane, he's got it. Any magic items of a rare classification or lower are always available.

Enchanting

The cost for getting a weapon or item enchanted is broken down based on the rarity of the enchantment. Rarity is modified by the mount of uses per day, if applicable, or the desired enchantment. Cornelius marks his prices up somewhat due to his shop operating Black Market, and the difficulty and rarity of the arcane in the modern era.

  • Common - 100 - 500gp
  • Uncommon - 500 - 1500 gp
  • Rare - 1500 - 5000 gp
  • Very Rare - 5000 - 10,000 gp
  • Legendary - 10,000 - 50,000 gp

He also carries a wide range of upgrade modules for astral ships and other vehicles. If you're in the know, and he's comfortable with you, he may even give you access to the purchase of bootlegged astral ships through his Myriad contact, Emerys Maerlon.

Purpose / Function

A centralized location for the fencing of stolen goods, or selling of otherwise difficult to move merchandise.

Alterations

The market has grown exponentially in size, with buildings being stacked on top of each other, and built into the walls.

Architecture

The market is carved out from the stone beneath Vespa. Some of the buildings contained within are built into the walls of the cavern itself, while others appear quickly thrown together, using sheets of metal or stone bricks. It appears as though when the space within the market was filled, new additions began building shops on top of other shops in a very mismatched fashion, or setting up tent stalls in the little free space there is.

Defenses

The defenses of the market are so well hidden that most people don't know they exist. There is an imposing looking tower, located in the Tower District, that serves as an information center, offering maps and help to visitors. In the top of the tower above, sit a series of Myriad agents who watch over the place for disruptions. Patrols of Myriad agents in plain clothes move about the streets regularly. They are watching for anything that might disrupt their business or cause the Myriad problems. Everything else is fair game.   There are foritifed turret gun emplacements at each of the entrances to the market manned by Myriad agents watching to keep out those who are no longer welcome in the market. The entrance tunnels can be barred off with lasers when needed. Within the walls of the cavern are small holes within which flying drones are kept. They can be activated from the tower, and sent to attack targets.

History

The Undermarket has been around since before the Saikar Empire officially formed. As grew, so to did its need for material goods. And they became harder and harder to come by. A joint construction by several different crime families, the Undermarket was carved out below ground as a place for these various gangs to sell their stolen goods. When the Empire formed, and began cracking down hard on crime, these crime families came together to form the Myriad, and began expanding construction of the area around the Undermarket, the beginning of the Warrens.

Tourism

The Undermarket is not considered a tourist destination. Its existence is known about by the authorities, but after several attempts to clear them out during the time of the Empire failed, an unspoken agreement was arrived at. The Undermarket could operate freely as long as they didn't impact anyone amongst the upper classes of society, and their operations were not done in such as way that it made it impossible for the authorities not to intervene.
