Calimport
Overview
Calimport, the city designated Calidor's capital by The Saikar Empire when the planet was added to The Occupied Territories, is a bustling port city despite its small population, compared to the megalopolis' of Bastion. It serves as the port of call for the massive commercial fishing industry the S.A.C runs to feed their people on Bastion, as well as a staging area for the S.A.C military to conduct counter-terrorism and counter-piracy operations as they try to wrest full control of the planet away from the local inhabitants.Demographics
The population of Calidor is comprised primarily of citizen species of the S.A.C, enterprising adventurers, up-and coming business savants, and the desperate hunting for the break that's going to make them rich. However, mixed among the motivated individuals is a large number of less savory types. People who don't want to be found, making their way to one of the most remote settlements that they can still find welcome in.
Mixed amongst these, is a portion of the local population, who call their people the Water-Born. Those that find their way into the dirty, and notably dry streets of this city of commerce are the ones who have bought in to the S.A.C's sales pitch, and have come here seeking to find their own rung, or even their own ladder, on which to begin the long climb to citizenship.
Government
Run by Governor Cynthia Danvers, answering directly to the Board, Calimport's oligarchic leadership claims dominion over all of Solus Island and the surrounding waters, and Cynthia is not shy to wield her significant power and influence to make any who would refute the claim regret the decision. Despite these claims, however, the S.A.C's interest her lies in the value of the fishing industry, and the Governor's hands are full coordinating defense against rampant piracy, mitigating damage from local fauna, and hunting rebellious cells in the far waters of Calidor, leaving the city wanting for attention.
The Governor's absent leadership has turned Calidor into a lawless, disorganized place. The services and functions normally maintained by ruling bodies to keep the wheels on the cart have fallen to the wayside, and few are willing, or able, to pick up the slack. The Myriad operates freely across the city, and contributes the lions share of resources and labour required to keep things running, but they cherrypick where and how their generosity is applied that they might profit most from it.
Defences
Like most other aspects of the city, the local government has put little to no money into building local defenses within or around the city. Instead, the city relies on the narrow straight at the mouth of Tidebreak Bay that cuts between steep, soaring cliffs. It is here, the S.A.C has put all of their eggs. Massive gatehouses and towers flank the bay's mouth, and a wide array of mitigative traps barricade the entrance against unwanted visitors, as the local threats don't travel far above the surface of the water. An island in the bay, just beyond the end of the straight, hosts an imposing fortress that serves as the S.A.C's garrison, naval staging area, and final point of defense against incursions.
Industry & Trade
A thriving fishing and agricultural industry, as well as a small logging and mining industry presence exists on Calidor, and all of it funnels through Calimport to be shipping off-world to the greater S.A.C markets.
Districts
Icthys District
Located near the heart of the city, the Icthys District is home to the wealthiest business owners and city elites. It is well policed by The Shepherds, The Prividea Conglomerate's private security force, and it is actively avoided by any who don't live there, or have good reason to risk a beating and extended jail sentence. The Stacks
This district makes up the vast majority of the city, and occpuies 75% of Calimfjord Island. Home to the working class, it is a poorly maintained district and the buildings range from verging on collapse to ancient and meticulously repaired. Most of the buildings are built of wood, and the layout is labyrinthine to those unfamiliar, with some streets twisting and turning with low to the ground house, and other streets buried under stacks of house built up on stilts to mitigate flood damages, stacking on top of each other to create a chaos or alleys, patios, raised wooden boardwalks, giving the ground level buildings the appearance of an subterannean undercity. Buried deep in the shadows of the Stacks, those in the know will find their way in to the Myriad's local safehouse.Sea's Respite
Primarily a commercial district, Sea's Respite occupies a crescent sdhaped region along the city's docks. Filled to the brim with brothels, inns and taverns for sailors on shore leave right along side Calimport's bustling merchants, massive warehouses and shipping yards, and multiple shipyards where the commercial fleets are regularly replenished from losses to pirate raids and sea monster attacks.South Island
Calimport's South Island is home to those residing somewhere between the working class and the wealthy elite. Small business owners, guild members, and successful mercenary and adventuring parties who've found some prosperity in violence executed on local troublemakers. South Island is home to the Guild Market, a large area occupied by the guild halls of all the important Greater and Lesser Guilds of the S.A.C, as well as temples. The Remoran Fields
Located on the mainland of the delta, the Remoran Fields is the true slum of Calimport. Occupied mainly by native inhabitants of Calidor come to take their shot at making it into S.A.C society and the Calimport locals who came here to leave something behind and disappear, it is a mishmash of haphazardly constructed huts and fabric shelters. It's impossible to tell that a short jaunt to the grasslands beyond would reveal a beautiful, serene natural landscape, hidden as it is behind the grime, garbage, and the forgotten dead of tyhe Remoran Fields.Points of interest
Kromak's Kollections
Run by an ancient, slow-talking female tortle come to take advantage of the high demand of Calimport, the shop appears from the outside to be particularly unremarkable. Located in Sea's Respite, Kromak's Kollections appears to be nothing more than a single room building squeezed between two rowdy brothels. Inside is a much different story. Kromak trawls the shores and oceans for lost treasures, storing them in a crowded underground warehouse beneath his storefront. His shop is filled with everything from useless trinkets to powerful, lost magic items and everything in between.Shoals n' Such
A fishing and sailing supply store, a subsidiary of The Prividea Conglomerate. It is run by run by Alistair Jones, once the infamous Jovial Jones, a pirate known for using Tasha's Hideous Laughter on ship captain's he defeated before torturing and killing them. He has since been made an honest man by the S.A.C. The shop sells everything from basic, personal fishing needs to large scale commercial fishing equipment, as well as a range of other water related goods.Lost Arcanum of the Deep
This shop is widely considered by locals to be a tourist trap. It is decorated to the nines with the bones and paraphernalia of the more spiritual and magic attuned cultures of Calidor, as well as unique shells, and pieces of shipwrecks. It is run by Faelyn Finareth, a Sea elf whose long brown hair is braided with dry seaweed and speaks in a soft, dreamy voice and wandering sentences. Despite local opinions, she is a kind woman, and her shop sells everything a person might need for rituals and potion making, as well as a collection of magic items, less than magic items, and some potentially cursed items.Geography
Calimport is built on a river delta in a sheltered, well defended Tidebreak Bay. The majority of the city is built on Calimfjord Island, and the South Island, carved out by the spreading arms of the Jade River as it runs out into the bay. The land immediately surrounding the city is fertile grassland that has been primarily converted to agriculture.
Climate
The island of Solus boasts a tropical climate; hot and humid, and subject to viscious monsoons in the winter months.
